Not made up in my mind, this is a Meritor system on the Freightliners we have in our company, not saying your car system isn’t any better or worse, just saying that this happens daily, ask any truck driver with this. This is where I’m coming from, if your system works, great, because these have a lot of room for improvements.

This is a history of the Subaru system: since 2008:

Subaru's system, branded "EyeSight", was announced in May 2008 using stereo camera technology to detect pedestrians and bicyclists. As initially announced, EyeSight enabled pre-collision braking control and adaptive cruise control at all speeds.[37] It was rolled out in Japan to selected models in 2010; in Australia in 2011; and in North America in 2013 model year Legacy and Outback models.[38] An alarm is used to warn the driver of a potential collision hazard in the pre-collision system. The pre-collision braking control was upgraded in 2010 to allow the vehicle to stop automatically if the speed difference between the EyeSight-equipped vehicle and the object in front is less than 30 km/h (19 mi/h) and the driver takes no action to slow down or stop. Above 30 km/h (19 mi/h), the vehicle will reduce its speed automatically.[37] It also allows the vehicle to engage braking assist if there is a risk of a frontal collision and the driver suddenly applies the brakes.[37] The speed difference to allow an automatic stop was raised to 50 km/h (31 mi/h) in 2013 with improved cameras.[39] The adaptive cruise control was also upgraded in 2010 to allow automatic emergency braking in traffic, fully stopping the EyeSight vehicle when the car in front has come to a complete stop.[37] In 2013, color was added to the cameras, allowing the system to recognize brake lights and red stoplights ahead.[39] Subaru also added an active lane-keeping (keeping the vehicle in the middle of the lane, and applying steering force to keep the vehicle in the lane when unintentionally crossing lane markers) and throttle management (to prevent sudden unintended acceleration in forward and reverse) systems in 2013 with the improved cameras.[39] EyeSight has been very popular, equipped on approximately 90% of all Legacy and Outbacks sold in Japan at the beginning of 2012,[38] and the engineers responsible for its development won a prize from the Japanese government that year.[40]

Sounds like lots of good points on both sides here. Wife's Rav4 with all this safety stuff should be here soon to test out. I'm kinda old school & not really sure about all this technology taking over but if it works the way it's intended then ok but I've seen enough computer glitches to make me wanna wait awhile

I haven't seen any chatter on how TSS works in snow, or other slick conditions.

How about deep snow, or heavy snowfall?

Just remember it is a "system" with it's parts -- If it is like the Subaru system --The Adaptive cruise is separate from the collision avoidance part, and another part is the rear collision avoidance system -- also another part is the rear side/corner traffic/people/bikes/shopping cart warning part. There are many parts --again if it is like the Subarus. Yet another part is the "blind spot section". Are you seeing what I am talking about ?-- many parts to the "system" --some interact --some do not! On the Subarus --I don't think there is a way to shut the collision prevention part off --short of blocking (with a piece of cardboard) the stereoscopic cameras. You will have warnings on the dash that something is wrong with "Eyesight system" (you also will loose your adaptive cruise control when blocking the cameras) The Subaru's also have a standard cruise built in --we have never used our standard cruise control after having the "adaptive".I did turn it on once (in 3 yrs) to see if it worked --it did!
Now if you are so inclined (and stupid) to want to use your cruise control (smart cruise ,or any other kind) on snowy/slick road conditions. PLEASE USE YOUR YOUR BICYCLE SEAT instead of your car seat!! You have no business on the road. Snowy/slick/heavy rain conditions demand the drivers full attention, and I do not want you driving anywhere near me or my loved ones!

I agree on the BSM. I find the blind spot monitor helps me a bit, but I tend to try to keep tabs of all vehicles directly around me. It once helped me see a fast approaching vehicle in the left lane when I was trying to get over. Dude was really moving, and I didn't even see him coming up. Turned my blinker on and the side mirror light started flashing like crazy almost at the same time.

I don't have any of the other stuff on mine, and am fine with that.

That's exactly the way the Subaru system works -- the faster they are coming at you the faster it flashes (in the side mirror) . I had a guy/gal? go by me at 90+ one day and you are right--they can surprise you --almost wish there was a auditory warning or a flasher in my "active sight area" (in front of me, when someone is coming that fast!!

I like that they flash when I am backing up if someone is driving where I am backing. Especially if I am boxed in between two oversize suvs and cant see a thing.

I've always wondered how these auto systems (steer, brake, avoidance ) systems work in adverse conditions....

For people worried about the braking system interfering with their own accident avoidance, please be at ease. These systems kick in at the very last possible moment. If the truck is already braking for itself, you are already at that critical moment. If you really are a safe driver then the system should never have to interfere.

False positives are a problem. I get that semi-truck systems may have problems. I have my doubts that this indicates passenger cars and trucks will have problems. We already have many passenger cars using these systems and there haven't been the problems people are complaining about. Semi trucks are big and heavy which means their systems have to be tuned to be more sensitive. Also, I doubt the R&D dollars for this sort of thing are anywhere near how much Toyota can throw at the problem which leads to lower quality systems.

Although we all do our best to be vigilant drivers, we all have lapses. Can anyone here say they've never ever had a car "come out of nowhere" or momentarily crossed a lane line? More importantly, do you think that never happens to other drivers? It's normal to be wary of change but cars and trucks have only been getting safer as time goes on.

And quite frankly, safety concerns aside, who wouldn't want the truck to drive itself the boring 14 hours of interstate to Moab? Wake me up when we get there and I'll drive on the rocks, the computers can have the interstate. The future is wonderful.

My wife's Rav4 also has it and it saved her from an accident twice now. In both occasions someone missed their turn so they quickly veered into her lane. Had it not been for the collision avoidance system, she would have hit them. The radar guided cc is also pretty nice. I'll admit that when we first bought it I would intentionally let the vehicle veer out of my lane (no other vehicles around of course) just to watch it correct itself...I'm easily amused. My only concern would be the radar placement and how that might interfere with an aftermarket winch bumper with lights. Also, I've heard rumors that Toyota is saying the new Tacoma will not be modifiable as a result of the new safety features.

I’ll let you know the first snow storm I have to drive in with the Volvo semi I have for work. Can’t lie I’m a little nervous about it (and I’ll run with a regular tractor up into the mountains in a blizzard without thinking about it. Done it many times without issue)

As I stated before, and as someone else has said, The (collision avoidance) system (on our Subaru) will give you some time to act on your own behalf. If you don't do it -- the vehicle will. As far on slick conditions -- makes no difference. if you don't act on a snowy road-- ours would still to stop/slow you down. Buuut face it, the auto mfr's can't change the basic law of friction -- it would take more time in bad road conditions. The SIMPLE solution here is to slow your but down yourself when conditions warrant more vigilant driving. You should not rely
on the safety systems to monitor the surface traction conditions. That feature will be out on the 2021 models :) .

You bring up some valid points with r&d and the collision avoidance, Toyota dose do very well and if anyone can do it right they can. Although I’m one of the few who would hate the vehicle driving for me, that’s why I drive. I love doing it. I do understand with the current cell phone apocalypse happening this could be appealing to a lot of people though.

Don't get me wrong, I love driving too, I've driven across the country multiple times in different vehicles. But after a full day of snowboarding, I'm totally down to hand the reins over to the computer after I pilot us safely over a snowy donner pass and we're back on dry pavement. It's funny when I read older books and the characters lament the invention of the automobile "A horse is better, a horse knows the way home when I've been drinking too heavy. The auto has no soul" Maybe we're finally coming back around to a car being a willing companion like a horse instead of a dumb machine.

My 18 tundra came with Lane departure and BSM turned off already in the menu. The adaptive cruise is overridden when setting cruise by holding the button down to set instead of simple press. The accident avoidance doesn’t apply the brakes as hard as most think. I tried it out with my other vehicle and it starts beeping and gently applies brakes until you jam down then it helps you slow down. It’s not intrusive at all.
