I just had my clutch replaced with the stage 2 clutch from urd. While I was at it I also had the upgraded TOB with the steel sleeve installed.

Before I had these parts installed when rolling 2nd at a stop sign or running in low rpms in 2nd gear I would hear a chatter from the trans like something is loose or not seated properly but only in 2nd gear.

Now that the new TOB and sleeve is installed I hear this noise in every gear. The only way to seem to make it not do it is to super baby it through the gears or run it super hard..
It’s a pretty loud chatter just wondering if the install was done improperly or the parts were faulty. All of the other post about TOB failure mention a squeal and this is definitely not a squeal. Any idea what could be going on?

Take a look at your transmission mount. There's a good chance that's your problem. Marlin Crawler makes a replacement. URD probably does too.

Could this have anything to do with the slave cylinder issue and the squeal or chirp everybody talks about? It’s definitely more of a chatter sound but does sound like something that’s rotating that’s making the noise. Making me not sure it’s a mount

Chatter when in gear could easily be a mount. The trans is continually flexing the rubber mount. If it's failing, it can make all sorts of noises. It's just one possibility to explore.

I have the same issue/situation. However, I did the slave cylinder refresh/upgrade. I also have a hotspot on my flywheel now so I'm going to have it turned and have the rest inspected while theyre in there. Will update after.

okay yeah let me know how it goes. have you done the slave cylinder upgrade yet or you're waiting to do it all at once? I just had my flywheel resurfaced so I wouldn't think I'd have issues there but I'm starting to think its the spring assembly in my slave cylinder that's causing the issue. I've also heard of cases where the bearing and sleeve from URD don't fit snug enough due to the bearing not being bored to a tight enough tolerance. I wasn't able to check the parts myself before they were installed so fingers crossed that's not the case..

Generally it is that the quill is damaged badly and the sleeve does not fit snuggly. JB Weld does a good job at filling the gap.

Then the set screws aren't loctited down, and the sleeve, in rare cases, will spin and rattle.

Most problems are associated with the installation and not the parts.

The noise seems to go away if I slightly put pressure on the clutch peddle. Could it be the issue with the spring in the slave cylinder? Or more likely one of the issues you said? It also doesn’t always do it which is strange

Sounds simply like the TOB itself.

thanks for the reply. I guess Ill give the slave cylinder fix a shot since its by far the cheapest and if no luck there I'll have the trans pulled again..

I called my mechanic and asked about the fitment of the steel sleeve and was told it had to be put on with a hammer making it a tight fit. does this sound right? sounds sketchy to me considering how weak ive heard the cast quill is

That is normal and means it was installed well.

As I said before, I’ve done the slave cylinder rebuild. What year is your truck?

Also keep in mind the sleeve kit doesn’t guarantee the chirping goes away. It just guarantees that the TOB doesn’t eat through the pilot shaft.

Edit:I see now that you have an 08. Ask the mech that installed your stuff if he inspected/replaced the pivot ball and fork? There’s a tsb on the pivot ball having a longer stud. This puts a bit more pressure on the TOB and slightly changes the angle of attack on the TOB.

UPDATE: I had the urd clutch removed and after less than 1000 miles I had pretty bad hot spots on my flywheel. Had it resurfaced and put an OEM clutch back in it. All issues are now gone and I don't have any weird noises so far. Wish I had just done this to begin with..
