I'm looking for a winch. I'm really not familiar with brands. I did a search and didn't find any thing useful. I have heard of Mile Marker so I wanted to know if anyone is familar with this brand or could point me in the right direction. Found this one for $370.00

Can't go wrong with a WARN. We have a HS9500i. It's been flawless for 5 years.

Whatever you get.... find out if you can get synthetic rope instead of wire rope.

i'd personally buy a warn, but if you're looking for cheap theres a 8000 milemarker, like the one pictured, with smittybilt branding on it that you should be able to find for $300. 4-wheel parts and winchdepot.com seem to have good prices if you wanna look around.

cant go wrong with a warn,i had a mile marker,it worked pretty well but the hardware that they put on their winches is terrible.the nuts and bolts and the roller fairleed were rusting bad within 6 months.i had a 12000 lb winch.best of luck.

    REMEMBER,CANT GO WRONG WITH WARN!

BUY A WARN!!!! I can't stress enough how happy you will be if you buy the warn, it is well worth the money if you can afford it. You will not need anything more than 8000 if you are buying it for your taco. How do you p[lan to mount it?

Noobie question time. I have an '04 TRD PreRunner. Do I need to get a special bumper/grillguard/bullbar to be able to mount a winch to the front? I am currently looking at getting a bullbar, can most of them accomodate a winch?

Think of a winch as being similar to a hitch. A hitch is mounted to the frame and you can tow 5-6500lbs with it.

A winch can yank, tug, & pull 9,000lbs (give or take) worth of force. There isn't anything else on the truck that could handle that pressure (so to speak).

So anything that a winch is mounted to, must (somehow) be integrated or attached to the framework.

Ok, so I can't just mount the winch to my exisiting setup without the addition of a specialized bumper... cool... looks like the winch might have to wait then lol...

If the cable is only rated at 9500 lbs is it safe to use a snatch block (or pulley block) with it. Also, how much did the synthetic rope cost?

yeah but u gotta remember with that rope that every splice or knot in it derates it a fair amount. its according to what knot you tie as to what percent it derates. but on the winch matter i just purchased a mile marker sev. months ago.. i used to be a DIEHARD warn fan like eveyone else and theyre great winches. top of the line. but on my last truck i replaced 2 warns. im not one to argue bout something to much but i believe i got a better deal with my milemarker. its stood up to the tests so far. my buddies got a 9500lb mile marker on his wrangler and its phenominal how good it works. i put a 12000lb on my tacoma just in case i needed something a lil stouter..... but the price between warn and milemarker is crazy i can buy 2 milemarkers for the price of one warn. plus with mine i got some lucky sale where they throw in a 4wheeler winch. got that mounted on the foreman and its standing up to ALLLLLLLLLL kinds of abuse............... just a thought tho you dont have to buy a name to get the best work...............

    Short answer: Yes

    Long Answer:
In the use of a snatch block each run shares the total load.
So Ex... Using one snatch block pulling 10,000 lbs. each run carries 5,000 Lbs.
The winch effectively pulls 5,000 Lbs.
The mount on the movable object (tow hook you attach the line to on the truck) pulls 5,000 Lbs.
The permanent object (Tree) carries 10,000 Lbs. <--oh and so does the snatch block

    Hope that explains it.

I prefer the wire to synth for abrasion purposes only. Dirt, mud, weather, etc... ruin a synthetic much quicker.
So winch lines are like toes...Everybody has a lot of them. And if their not theirs, they stink.

    More notes....

When you buy synthetic rope, you should request a heat shield and rock guard (I can't remember the exact names for these).

The Heat shield is a sleeve that goes over the synthetic rope at the base of the windings at the drum. This protects the synthetic rope from the heat at the drum.

Don't forget to spool the line in properly & tightly. Always keep atleast 2 wraps around the drum at all times.

The stone/rock guard is another sleeve that stays at the end of the rope to slide it wherever needed to protect the rope from chaffing on rocks/soil/etc.

After every usage of the winch, you need to respool the line properly & keep it nice & firmly wound. Synthetic rope is easier to get tangled up and if you don't take care of it, it'll deteriorate and get runied much faster.

i think Warn is the way to go i have a winch on my four wheeler (3000lbs Warn) and it is very good. My father had a warn on this old ford truck and his jeep and they both were very dependable and strong. Ive heard that hydraulic winches are better than electric, but I've never used one, but i think they are for larger heavier vehicles.
