I hate to add confusion, but the 2007 Taco that I test drove didn't have the pattern on the knob. Since there are threads and Toyota is smart about production, I would like to think that they are the same threads.

Of course, none of that probably really helps anyone.

i got mine and the owner was pretty helpful about it. i know those reviews, so i emailed him first to see if they are up and running and a little discussion about the piece... we got a little email dialog going and i got my knob a bit later. you can also look at Anarchy Motive for knobs like that. i have 2 knobs from each, Flossy & AM.

Good to know that some have had positive experiences. I've looked at a lot of options for shift knobs, and I keep coming back to the Flossy Grip Tape Shorty I posted above. I may just have to give it a whirl and pray for a quick turnaround. As a side note, do you (or anyone else) have any experience with Flossy's shift boot retainer? I know there's always the Home Depot grommet option, but this just looks a little cleaner.

i haven't tried that myself. looks ok to try, but you'll still need something to hold it all together.

Do the MT have a higher gear ratio for 1st gear than the AT? I've noticed that I have to switch over to 4lo earlier than some of the AT guys I wheel with.

    Here you go! https://www.hotrodshiftknob.com/8-ball-classic-black-shift-knob/

Mine's the 2-1/4". I like the size, but it's not for everyone. It's the size of an actual pool ball. You will want to make sure and order it with the 12mm x 1.25 thread reducer as well.

As for the grommet.... I got on at the hardware store for like $.87 - just need to make sure the inside diameter fits your shaft :anonymous:

    No:
    Gear Ratios.jpg

But, the torque convert lets the driveline slip where the clutch is a solid lock. When the A/T goes into full lock in 1st gear, the M/T will be moving slower at the same RPM.

So to going slow under load in 4hi, the A/T will be heating up the ATF where you are running cool in 4lo.

had to re-read to make sure I understood.... do I have this right?

So in my example an A/T with similar setup (weight/tires etc) to my M/T will be able to make it up an incline in 4H where I have to switch over to 4LO to avoid stalling. This is because the A/T torque converter allows the drive line to slip whereas the M/T does not slip (unless you're burning your clutch)

Yep. The TC is adding more gear reduction at the expense of wasted energy / heat. Think of it this way, the A/T in gear at a stop is holding back the motor at idle (about 600rpm or so). You feel that drag by having to keep your foot on the brake. That is where A/Ts make life somewhat simpler at the expense of control.

In the end, you have a lot of speed range in 4lo. 1st gear at idle is slow as walking pace and 6th is pretty freaking fast considering. My only complaint is that I'd like to be able to drop in and out of 4lo at a speed higher than 2mph. Even then, the system doesn't cooperate. Stopping to switch in and out is more reliable.

    Gimme that twin stick!

I would kill to have a twin stick and lockers where you get out of the truck and turn the lockers.

Miss the twin stick, my '91 had one.

yeah the only real issue I have is the auto LSD doesn't work in 4LO, so if I get crossed up on a hill climb I loose all power to the wheels.

Yeah, manual hubs would be freaking nice considering the lack of a gizmo'ed 2lo. The front is actuated inside the clamshell, so that isn't even possible. Hopefully some day, someone can make a module like the one that Up2NoGood created for the 2nd Gens.

At least there is a solution for that. I have my sights set on an ARB locker at some point.

Sounds right... I'll see about slapping my calipers on there tonight when I get home.

IIRC I bought a misc pack of different sizes and just used the one that fit. Again just a few $$..
