Engineering degrees should require AT LEAST a year or two "co-op" in the field time.

    Real world vs theory.

It's not always "in the book".

A group of Kentuckians....Talking about going wheeling.....in Kentucky.

    Ohio sub-forum? Makes sense....somehow.

Who's still in this weekend. Maybe on me still. Awaiting the wife's thoughts.

Rain today, but no huge amount predicted.

    Mid 60's and dry Saturday.

There are two sides to this: there are the engineers who barely made it through school and basically get put in to a manager-ish position that has nothing to do with engineering. And there are research engineers that are incredibly smart but have no sense of practicality.

I've had coops in aviation, automotive, and research. My first full time job was aviation research, but I quickly got tired of babysitting - making sure the engineers who made 2x the money i did, didn't break equipment worth more than my salary... and tell them how to fix it when the ignored me the first time... My current position has to do with turbine engine repair and I consider it a fantastic education and stepping stone for whatever the future holds.

Most engineers are also stuck on their high horse and don't understand that the guys who have been working hands on with something their whole life know more a lot it than they do...

I've always felt the main issue is context. Engineers often work out of context, the shop guys can't work out of context. I spent a week with our assembly teams building an entire car and it was a great experience. Despite being an avid car-guy who built several FSAE racecars in college I still learned a good bit. Which is nice because my current job is to keep the design engineers in context.

See, in software engineering, I don't get to break equipment (usually). Instead I have to take nebulous requirements from someone who doesn't actually know what they want and try to create something that they do want.

All while spending millions of taxpayer dollars!

I just get tired of taking 3 hours out of my day to explain why the way the engineer wants it welded wont work. Here was yesterdays fun, if you look closely (hca1/3) is a piece of angle they want welded to rectangular tubing. Its roughly 10" long piece of angle and they want it to be 1/4" on arrow side while expecting it to not warp out of place. I originally expected it to be the drafting team but the more I looked it was called out in the engineer notes like that. So I had to fight for approval to get a tack weld on the side of the angle.
