A friend spent 3 days in jail after getting a ticket for 95 in a 65. He has a shitty driving record beforehand, but still.

    going to be fun!
VA does not fuck around......I think that continued annual bullshit is really fucked up....

Virginia is serious about curbing speed violations in the State and has introduced speeding fines that can top $3,000. More accurately, these are the fines imposed for speeding plus any reckless driving felony/misdemeanor violations you also incur.

Typically, a driver will pay $5.00 for every mph he or she is driving over the speed limit plus court fees of $62.00. Add to that the new civil penalties for Reckless Driving and you are looking at a tremendous fine! Additionally, these civil remedial fees are not one-time payments. You will be put on a scheduled payment plan where you will owe the specified amount annually:

    • 3-Point Demerit Violations at $5.00 for every mph over the posted speed limit:
Speeding 1-9 mph above the posted speed limit

    • 4-Point Demerit Violations at $5.00 for every mph over the posted speed limit:
Speeding 10-14 mph above the posted speed limit

Speeding 15-19 mph above the posted speed limit

Speeding 10-19 mph above the posted speed limit

    • 6-Point Demerit Violations at $5.00 for every mph over the posted speed limit plus all civil remedial fees:
Reckless driving - speeding in excess of 80 mph – Misdemeanor - $350.00 for each of the following 3 years

Reckless driving - speeding in excess of 80 mph – Felony - $1000.00 for each of the following 3 years

Reckless driving - speeding 20 mph or more above the posted speed limit – Misdemeanor - $350.00 for each of the following 3 years

Reckless driving - speeding 20 mph or more above the posted speed limit – Felony - $1000.00 for each of the following 3 years

Reckless driving - driving too fast for conditions – Misdemeanor - $350.00 for each of the following 3 years

Reckless driving - driving too fast for conditions – Felony - $1000.00 for each of the following 3 years

As you can see, the harshest civil remedial fee when added to the regular fees assessed when you are issued a reckless driving – speeding in excess of 80 mph ticket will cost you $3,000 + $400 (80 x $5) + $62 (court fees) = $3,462.00. It is likely that you will have your Virginia license suspended and spend some time in jail, too.

Hey sorry to butt in on the speeding discussion, but me and my buddy, who's birthday is this Saturday. He wants to do Bald Mountain, but I would really prefer to do it with a group. I know all you guys are going next weekend, but would anyone be down this weekend? It would mean alot, as he just got a nice used Cherokee and he has been wanting to go off roading for a while now. Thanks!

There is a guy looking to buy a pair of stock headlights. Might be able to make a few bucks if you want.

Well 82 in a 65 is 17 over. I got charged with reckless for that. Also on the beltway 75 would be 20 over. All those reckless drivers on there every single day.

Yup, I got 82 in a 55 along Route 17 down in Caroline county. Had to go to court...plead guilty, showed my driving record, showed my military service. Two question/comment I got was...where was I going that fast at 6:30 am? Trout fishing sir...it was the only nice day in January and I wanted to get to my spot! (the entire court pretty much started laughing). The second was...your too young to be retired from the military! I just responded with the "fishing keeps me young sir!" Another round of laughter.

Gave me a reduced charge of 61 mph and driving safety course (online). Still cost me about $500 total with lawyer cost, fine, class, records pull.

It does make me wonder how all these idiots on 95, 395, 495, 66, 270, drive like a holes and not get caught. I was all by myself and got caught (duh...the whole reason I got caught right).

This sucks then, especially since a lot of the farther out interstates are now 70. If you are going 10 over, which is pretty average, there will be a lot of reckless tickets going out if anything 80+ is automatic. Maybe they need to update their laws to reflect the higher speed limits on the highways.

You were over 80, so that’s why it was reckless...

It doesn’t matter if you’re at 81 MPH, if the officer wants to charge you with reckless, he/she can.
