oil change and warranty

Anyone ever dealt with doing a DIY oil change and had the dealer throw a fit about not paying someone to do it. I'm a big DIY kinda guy but don't want to void the warranty on my new truck because I changed the oil myself. I figure if I save all receipts and buy Toyota Brand Filters they shouldn't void it correct?

Any input will be appreciated.

If they give you grief on changing the oil yourself?!?! Tell them to pound sand cause I did my own from day one and most people on here do as well!!! It should not void the warranty.

 

The dealer is giving a line of BS! Take a look at your owners manual. There is a section in there about changing your own oil. No where does it say that you will void your warranty, etc. Just keep your receipts. I enter mileage, date of change, oil type and filter in my own logbook. All the dealer is trying to do is line their pockets, big time, at your expense!

 

I've done every oil change and will continue to do so. I'm not letting some monkey who doesn't care about my truck change the oil.

I don't even save receipts, they're just going to have to trust me if I need warranty service. My oil has been changed at the appropriate times, I don't see why it would be up to me to verify to the dealer that I don't fit into any little loopholes they may have to avoid giving me warranty service.

 

As long as they can't prove that the oil directly caused any failure, which is virtually impossible to prove, there is no issue.

 

I am planning on doing my own oil change just as many of you prefer. Now I had an extended warranty on my truck in which for the duration I don't have to pay anything for maintenance, esp for the 15K, 30K, 45K up to 100K. I am thinking if I have a good record keeping, they will honor the warranty job my truck might need.

I do the oil change myself, they do the other complicated stuff where I dont have the tools or equipment for.

 

Dealer will not and cannot void your warranty because you do your own oil changes. Use the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 as your defense.(Google it- great info) According to it the dealer cannot void your warranty because of using aftermarket parts- and this would qualify.- but I would keep your have receipts just to be safe.(More detail in the actual Act. We have a comparable act here in Canada, based on the M-M W.A. of 1975 that I have printed up and keep with my Taco.) Just FYI.

Another bit of advice while still in warranty. If you find yourself not being able to install a Toyota branded filter and have to go after market, make sure to use the correct size that is cataloged to your truck.

A lot of people like to do the "oversize" filter thinking more is better. The problem is that in case of a oil filter failure, Toyota will refer you to the oil filter maker for compensation and the oil filter maker can deny compensation if using a non cataloged size.
