    Look into this
upload_2017-11-30_7-30-7.jpg Canik 9mm 16+1. The older model the TP9 is a S/A but the newer model the TP9DA is a S/A,D/A. I was considering this for a truck gun.

Respectfully, I'd disagree. I learned on a single shot, and I was still enjoying shooting it when I got a tube-fed .22 for x-mas. The advantage of a single shot are that they teach the child to take their time and aim carefully, rather than just dumping rounds down range. I was probably a better shot at 12 than I am now, haha!

A good compromise (in my own opinion) would be to get a tube or magazine fed bolt or lever action .22, so that they still have to take their time on each shot, but they don't have to fumble with a fresh round for every shot.

10/22 if you ask me, hell just get them out there shooting. Besides the most important then you can teach kids just learning to shoot is how to be safe with a firearm so they don't kill themselves or someone around them, the best way to do that is having them shoot, everything else comes second.

As an adult with lots of shooting experience, I would agree but, he has a year of BB gun safety under his belt (to varying degrees of success *cough cough* muzzle sweep). I want him to start with something that minimizes the chances of me being shot if there's an errant sweep or lazy finger on the trigger.

I agree. I started with a Remington Nylon 66 which held 15 or 16 rounds in a tube. It was great having all that ammo ready to go, but my first mistakes when starting were trying to shoot too quickly.

THIS. The 10/22 is something he can use forever, especially something modular like a Takedown, but it might be too big for him. There's a lot of appeal in these sub 5 pound bolt-action rifles. Plus, he has a little sister who will inevitably inherit his starter rifle.

This is a good idea. I'll look into these. I agree, I want him to take time between each shot to learn the process. We've worked on this with the Daisy: safety on, muzzle down, chamber round, clear area, raise rifle, aim at target, safety off, ready to shoot, finger on trigger, squeeze, safety on, repeat. I think I was a better shot at 12, too!

That's the goal! If money were not an issue, I'd be all over the lever action Browning:

The Marlin Papoose also looks swell. I have his granddad's tube-fed Western Auto Revalation .22 (Marlin 60 with walnut stock) in the safe. It needs a new spring. Now that I think of it, I think my dad has a .22 tube feed for him too. I'll have to check.

Kids do like semi-autos better than bolt actions, no doubt.

If you go with a 10/22, you could get a 1 round magazine, to train and enforce the good habits of sight picture and trigger control. After some serious practice, then swap in a 30 rounder and let 'em rip!

I carry the Taurus 66 everyday and the only issue I have ever had with it is .357 tulammo cases swell so much that you have to push them out with a key, but I read the same thing about that ammo on a S&W forum. its super cheap for plinking but really not worth it; it even has slowed the cylinder cycling due to the cases contacting the back plate and not allowing it to rotate without resistance. so from now on its just brass .357 or 38 spl in its diet (ive carried it for almost 2 years and put 500 rounds or so through it)

If you're just plinking on the cheap, why not just shoot .38's? That's what I use for plinking in my .357's, because FMJ or wadcutters in .38 are considerably less expensive than the same thing in .357
That way you can skip that shitty steel or aluminum cased poly-coated crap.

I could get 50 rounds of that tulammo fmj .357 for $12 a box which was the same price as the .38 tulammo and I figured more pop for the same price; the last time I ordered any I just got 38 fmj (maybe armcore or something, but it was brass) and I think it was maybe a dollar a box more but I had no issues with it so it may be my go to plinker now... recoil is not an issue with a 36 oz 4" barrel .357 so that part doesn't bother me

10/22 would be ok just make sure its unloaded till the rifle is pointed in a safe direction obviously.

yeah maybe 2-5 rounds in the 10 round magazine after he's gotten some good practice. Walmarts typically have a marlin semiauto also both can usually be bought there and are cheaper than most gunshops.

Totally agree, we all suggested the 10/22 over a marlin because of the massive aftermarket availability on every part of that gun for future add on’s, where the Marlin doesn’t have that kind of market, but it is still a very good rifle

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen beginner shooters turn around in stunness end excitement with a gun still in their hand in muzzle everybody sitting there or just straight drop it. This is why I only run one round with beginners. I even had a kid try to tilt the gun up and blow the smoke off the barrel And of course grabbing it quickly, when asked why, he said because he saw it in a movie!!!!!!

Lasering is a bad habit that 95% of first-time shooters have a hard time with. A buddy and myself took his granddaughter shooting for her first time (11y/o). Told her not to touch anything on the table. Had all weapons pointed downrange with actions open and explained to her why. Reviewed safety rules and asked her if she was ready to pick up a weapon. She said yes and we instructed her to pick up a pistol- immediately lasers both of us. "Whoa!" Told her to put the weapon back down and calmly asked her if she knows what she did. Stunned look on her face, but then whispers, "I pointed the gun at you.". I said, "Yup. You just killed me and your grandpa. Now you have to call grandma and explain to her that you just killed us and you're stuck out here in the desert with two dead bodies because you don't know how to drive or how to get back home."

    She never did it again.

I just ordered my 4 year old a pink cricket bolt action. I think it’s best to start them off with a single shot it’s better and teaches them discipline, accuracy and safer!! If they have a semi auto they want to just blow through shells and not learn the principles of shooting!! Just my 2 cents lol!!!

I got ahold of my dad. He has a new in box walnut Model 60 sitting in his safe. It’s not full-on youth size, so we’ll wait until he’s a bit older and can handle the weight of that one. This means I might wind up with a 10/22 for my truck. LGS has them for $207.
