Just a question, mine is in shipping status. Can you remove those 2 screws and discard them?

 

see post 1041 on page 53--i dont know what that black area around the screw is called but that area is what needs some dremeling/sanding. That what is preventing the grille from being totally flush. I am not sure if taking out the screws will do anything because you still have the raised area surrounding the screw. I sanded the area so there was more space and with that little mod everything snapped in snugly and tightly.

IF there was one flaw with the purchase it would be this. Luckily the sanding is "behind" the grill so you cant see the residual scratches. Absolutely everything else about this fake grille is on point.

This thread only started 20 days ago, and it blew up. The sun is weak right now for the bulk majority of the US, even in the Southwest. I am curious to read how these faux grilles hold up under the sun. Fading...discoloration/graying...bleaching...possibly even warping due to heat. Now, I'm not knocking the knock-offs, and hopefully they do indeed hold up. But one has to wonder between a $400 (over-priced) genuine part vs. a $140-$170 replica part. Hell, maybe the same factory produces both, and it actually is the OEM for Toyota! Technically, ABS is poor under the sun unless it's enriched with UV inhibitors. So if those are missing in the mix, i.e. to lower cost, then these grilles are going to suck when the sun comes back out! I guess only time will tell.

 

It seems we overlook the tendency for OEM black plastic grilles, bumpers and trim parts to fade and crack over time. I see this often and have experienced it on multiple vehicles I’ve owned. Your last line sums it up though, we’ll see how well these grilles hold up over time, but if they fade and crack, it won’t be much different from OEM pieces that have done the same.

 

This is true. But it seems quality of plastics between manufacturers varies. For example, my previous truck, an 06 Nissan Frontier had plastics all over the place that grayed under the sun. It was stupid to try to keep up with detailing it...door handles, vent molding under the wipers, plastic behind the side mirrors, window trim, etc. On the other hand, I also have a Subaru, and the plastic parts are nice and black. Absolutely no graying or fading. With respect to the Frontier, I swore up and down that my next truck would have less plastic. Well, that didn't go over too well--haha!--as I now have a TRD OR which has the plastic over the wheels! Hopefully, Toyota/OEM's did their homework and mixed in plenty of UV inhibitors. Needless to say, I plan on keeping these trim pieces slathered with 303 Protectant!

 

What about taking preventative measures and spraying with something like this?

I live in AZ so I'm concerned about UV exposure as well.

 

Get the 303 anyway. It's good stuff in general. Good for low-gloss protection of tires and exterior trim. It doesn't last forever though, and in order to truly protect against graying and oxidation, you must be diligent in its reapplication.

 

Does it damage paint, as in needing to tape off before applying? Theoretically you could slide a piece of cardboard behind the grill and spray every 2 months, correct?

 

Good point about the variance of plastics durability amongst manufacturers. My experiences with fading and cracking plastics stemmed from 90s-00s Chevrolet vehicles.

I was so impatient and in a rush because I was going to be away from home for a week and as a result I dinged that outer ring when I didnt lay the old assembly on a towel or blanket. Oh well. That's on me.

regardless, 140 vs 400 is well worth it. Everything is snapped in, snug and it looks good.
