My opinion, get a bolt action that is magazine fed, either tube or standard magazine fed, the kid has the ability to grow into it but you can also limit the capacity to help teach them fundamentals and how to slow down and shoot properly.

    For an adult, sure.

For a 7 year old who is learning how to shoot, notsomuch.

I still use a tube-fed bolt action .22 around the house. Perfect squirrel gun, since you have relatively quick follow-up shots if necessary, but it'll shoot subsonic LR, long, or shorts. Keeps the neighbors happy. Keeps the GF happy, too, since I've had to start sniping them from inside the house. As soon as I stick the barrel out the window now they bolt, so I have to shoot them from 3-4 paces back from the window, sniper style.

I agree, single-shots can get boring real soon. How about something in the middle, like a Henry lever action? I love my 10-22, but I love my Henry just as much, very smooth action. I think it would be a life-time keeper too.

    Something to consider.

My brother and i learned on a 22lr single shot bolt gun. We were entertained for hours easily with it. We were masters of working the bolt, lining a fresh round up and blasting the paper target. Absolutely not boring imo. We would go through a 550 round brick in one day at the range between us.

Marlin model 60 is lighter if that is a concern. The Ruger costs more, but has more aftermarket items. I have slayed over 200 armadillos with my trusty Marlin that is cobbled together from two broken ones.

It is, until she-who-must-be-obeyed yells from the other room "DID YOU JUST SHOOT ANOTHER SQUIRREL FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE?!" when I thought I was being all stealthy

Usually it's the dog that gives me away; she'll hear the gun no matter where she is in the house and freak out because she wants to go get the squirrel I just killed.

I saw them last time I was in there and they didn't look bad for the price (Don't remember the cost but a lot less than a Pelican case). Will probably go back and pick up a couple sometime in the near future. Didn't feel as durable as a pelican case but it seemed like it would work for most applications.

I look at cases like I look at coolers, if you’re not throwing it off the back of a truck, out of an airplane or lending it to a “friend”, LOL the lesser expensive is the sensible choice at 1/10 the price!

Not going to thread the barrel on my 40's vintage Marlin. Plus the suppressor would prevent me from reloading it unless I unscrewed the suppressor first, since it's tube-fed.
Besides, CCI standard vel. probably makes about the same noise through a can as the 22 shorts that I run in that gun to deal with squirrels.
