OEM is 500 I believe. The OME are 590
It's fine. That's what I've ran on two separate trucks. It's an awesome budget lift.

One of the most common setups in TW.

I can't make the recommendation coz I've never run this setup. But I think it's a common setup.

But @HolyHandGrenade may have. I know for sure @Sub-Zero has, and maybe still is.

Simple version: when any wheel is off the ground something has to stop the suspension down travel. On an OEM suspension that's the shock running out of travel. This is fine, because it keeps everything else inside comfortable working parameters; but it means that a) you don't get all the possible down travel out of the suspension and b) if you rapidly lift the truck off the ground (think jumps or similar) the spring pushes that shock into it's stop with a fair amount of force.

Because we all want travel for wheeling the solution to a) is a longer travel shock, backed by a bigger spring to provide lift and support our heavy armor/bumpers. Now the limiting factor is either the articulation range of the joints (ball or uni) or the UCA hitting the coils. With the lifted ride height alignment is an issue too. So we go to an after market control arm, which changes the location of the joint (relative to the frame) and allows more articulation. For wheeling around here (no jumping) using the shock as a limiting factor is probably fine. Crashing the UCA into the spring isn't great, but ok. Using a Ball Joint to limit articulation will kill them, as they are not meant for this, and neither are the protective boots that keep the grease in.

My Opinion: when we mess with the stock design we're re-opening the box of engineering trade offs that Toyota made at the factory. There is a good reason they made the choices they did, however with some knowledge of how it all fits together you can get better performance and acceptable tradeoffs. My system trades maintenance and noise for travel, YMMV.

I'd suggest the Mdi Travel BS thread as a good place to start. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mtbs-2-0.410188/

Only if you plan on getting steel bumper or winch.

Then yes that's fine. That's what I started with. If he plans on a winch or steel bumper then 886 springs.

    Bumper/winch first - saggy ride

    Springs/shocks first - rough ride

Ideally: buy everything as it goes on sale and do a single mod day.

To answer your question on spring rate: the units are Inch/Pounds so a "500 pound spring" compresses 1 inch per 500# of pressure applied.

Based on vehicle weight, and the length of the coil (after it is assembled in the coil-over) ride height is determined. The complicating factor is that coil springs also have a minimum length (when the coils touch, called Coil Bind). This limits the preload we can put on a spring to get ride height.

As with everything else in suspension, ride quality and performance are a trade off, and making big changes (armor, bumpers, winches) will make a formerly great truck into a dog.

Bullshit. Your ome’s don’t cause your tc’s to over extend. Your uca’s do nothing to limit any over extension. Your uca’s would keep dropping if it wasn’t the coilovers stopping it.

I had 886s before I had skids and bumpers. It was fine. People act like the suspension won’t cycle at all without the weight.

Then, when I added bumpers etc., I was good to go without having to redo the lift. Which I did anyway...

    This works too.

But, if I have parts, they NEED to be installed immediately. lol

Thats what I just said... the JBA coil must have no stopper to limit it from going beyond its point of no return causing it to break...

And, it’s been out of the box for a while now. Notice the creative bottle placement.

Did you have the 5100's or the OME shocks with those 886's?
