I'm not trying to distract from the issue here - it's a fairly serious one - but why are you guys needing to full throttle accelerate 1-2x a week? Outside of wanting to (500+hp cars) I've never had to launch off the line to avoid traffic.

Where I live I have to pull out into an extremely busy 4 lane road to leave home. Depending on day and time if I didn't give it full throttle to get out I would likely sit there for 30 minutes before I could get into the road.

Why is not the question, fact is if I want to get into the throttle on take off, I should be able to do it. Are folks getting this on video? Any one talked to Toyota about it?

Read this report, all detail about Toyota Electronic Throttle Control is here. If you don't have the issue then you are one of the lucky one.

"When the car goes into the limp-home-mode it is because the accelerator and engine control computer and the throttle are not talking to each other in a way that they can understand. The engine control computer shuts down the signal to the throttle position motor and a set of springs in the throttle set it to a fast idle, fast enough to get the transmission in gear but not so fast that driving may be dangerous."

No shit! Toyota better be on top of this. It's a scary situation and like faulty air bags and such will lead to major lawsuits! Bring on the attorneys or the recalls!

The 2016+ Toyota Tacoma was not one of the very small sample size of test vehicles in the study...which was done in 2010 with the following vehicles:

    1)
    2005
    Toyota
    Avalon
    (4T1BK36B55U001024)
    2)
    2006
    Lexus
    IS350
    (JTHBE262762001849)
    3)
    2007
    Toyota
    Tundra
    (5TBBV54177S449783)
    4)
    2009
    Toyota
    Matrix
    (2T1GE40E19C001003)

I'm not saying the Tacoma doesn't have this specific problem or not. I just want to highlight this point since most people aren't going to read past the headline.

You are correct! Just spent two weeks in Florida with an Alamo rented Hyundai Sonata with the limp issue! Scary trying to make a left hand turn through traffic getting into my motel. This needs to be corrected now! Someone is going to be seriously hurt due to a T-Bone or worse, i.e., die! Toyota are you listening?

Long time reader, first time posting. My 2017 (4,500 miles) bought in June also does the lurching, studdering as described here. Mine will do it from a stop with anywhere from 50% to full throttle. It’s been in the shop 3 times...and of course wouldn’t duplicate. It was doing it real bad one morning, stopped by the shop and luckily the mechanic got it on his computer. Still no resolution. My 2nd gen never did anything like this. It does it ECT on/off, traction control on/off. The fact that there are times that it doesn’t do it at all tells me these have no bearing on it. I’ve noticed it more with temps below 40F. Maybe that’s a fluke too. I’ve seen things about CPS and MAS being replaced, but haven’t seen a definitive “yes that’s it”. In addition to the shift happy transmission on this truck, this sucks with less than 5K on a Toyota.

Do you know the build date? Was it an early 17?

It is all manufacturers. This has been the norm for drive by wire for the past 10 years. It is scary shit and none of the manufacturers will own up to it. You are accelerating too fast for the condition or the car detected you were losing control of the tires and needed to slow it down for you.
My 2012 Ford Focus with the dual clutch tranny looked great on paper. It tried to kill my family no less than 20 times in the first two years. I would just accelerate from a red light and have the throttle die. I push the throttle to the floor and it says no. Then it smells like burnt clutch and it accelerates for a second or two and then realizes there is a problem and repeats the scenario again, I would have to pull off the road and shut off the car, then restart it and drive off. Most of the problems were resolved under warranty but this drive by wire crap is really not good except for fuel economy and on long distance drives.

Its what my 17 is doing, I pull out slow from stop sign usually, not fast---has 6 times lost power---dead in water, foot to floor. # appointments Toyota--say cannot find anything wrong. Have called Texas allot--she says not heard of it. Cannot get it to duplicate--. Just started Sept., @ 2,900 miles. Glad people are calling Texas--- we sure need a fix. ( Glad you made it ok---- people drive so fast--- and when rig stalls--- others do not know.

Luckily I got mine to duplicate with the mechanic in the truck and his computer plugged in. After having it for 4 days and getting mixed info from Toyota, service manager contacted a field rep with Toyota Motor Corporation. FR says it’s a known problem and they’re working on a fix. I suspect the fix will happen sooner if somebody gets hurt when their truck stutters/stalls in front of another vehicle. If I don’t hear anything by Dec 1, I’m looking into filing for a lemon law. At least on the 4 day shop trip, my local dealer gave me a loaner (Camry doesn’t have the issue).

4 days==wow===glad you could get it to duplicate it---mine started at 7 months, and Toyota cannot get it to do it, and I cannot--I have tried allot. It surges allot---is dangerous backing up and at stop lites.( But the stalling out-hesitating is bad.

I meant after having it in service for 4 days. The issue showed up after I had the truck 3 months. From a stop, if you mash the pedal to the floor, mine will do it 90% of the time. Mine will sometimes do it with >50% throttle. Along with the stuttering, I sometimes get an intake backfire (only 1 in 10). I’ve heard of some doing it right off the lot.

Its getting bad, Im almost broke.
When i took my truck in the mechanic was able to duplicate it as well as on all the new Tacoma’s on the lot. Toyota knows about it. Do they care? Meh.

I had this issue in my Subaru which was also DBW throttle. First time was a bad cat in exhaust from too rich of ECU tune causing bogging. Fixed that issue but came back later on after quite a few miles. Not the cat this time but felt similar so I did some DBW research. I got an AVO Turbo DBW throttle controller & fixed the issue in a big way. Totally remapped throttle & power band. No more bogging!
Not sure if this would be a fix or if anything like this is available in the Toyota world but figured I'd throw that out there
