My new V-6 2017 takes "0W-20", I'll switch to Mobil 1 soon. I used to add Lucas Oil Treatment to my Chev Trailblazer (250k miles, still going strong) which used 5W-30. Anyone using Lucas or STP type additives ? safe to use with such a thin oil ??

Lucas prevented dry starts due to cling effect, probably same with STP. Great idea on the oil sample analysis. would love to hear the results.

Not necessary imo. I recently did the blackstone analysis on my tacoma with 140k miles and a 7,500 mile interval...they said stretch it to 10k. I use synthetic oil in my truck.

If the oil I'm using requires additives I think I'd want to switch to a different oil.

How long did it take to get results? I'm at two weeks since mailing mine in. First timer! :)

I sent a few different times and I think it was roughly 3 weeks for my samples.

the oil itself has an additive package already in it, just wasting money buying more from STP

    I like Mystery Oil.
Once a year, one quart of Dino substituted for MO @ oil change. Also 4oz on the tank at fill up.

My dad used slick 50 way back in the day in his '89 suburban. Truck ran great before and no issues. At about 100K he figured he'd start using an additive. It smoked from then on lol. My advice would be to use a high end synthetic (I like amsoil signature series) and call it good.

No need to worry about cling when a 0-something circulates so quickly at start. However a diesel rated oil has a more robust additive package for cleanliness as in more detergents and anti wear as in zinc etc. Better protection at the possibility of poisoning the cat after several hundred thousand miles. I use only 0-something usually 0-40 diesel in absolutley every every IC engine except 2 stroke of course. The 0-40 only acts like a 40 under extreme heat conditions. Mostly unnecessary. Hey but its there if you need it. The exception is running Marvel Mystery until warmed up then dumped out in an abused dirty motor to clean out some of the sludge when buying a used pice of equipment. Cleans things up nicely but run on it all the time no way.

AMSoil 100% synthetic. 5W-30. It runs better.

Only additive I have ever used is Marvel. But only in a motor that has obviously not had enough oil changes but runs well. Let some oil out. Pour in Marvel. Run to warm but not overly hot and and drain out. Watch the black crud and crap come out. Refill with a good diesel synth and good to go.

Anyone using Zmax? I used to use it in my '90 Grand Am...had 262k miles on the original engine and transmission when I traded it. Thinking about running it in the truck...I forgot all about it until this thread popped up.

How do you know you wouldn't have got the same results w/o it?

Just because it had it doesn't mean it added value.

Oil of right weight, right API, right change interval for duty of vehicle is all that's needed.
