bearings

anyone change their bearings yet. My truck is making the noise of a card in a bicycle wheel and i'm thinking its the bearings. the noise goes away when i turn right though.

 

Sounds like a classic wheel bearing symptom, but you might want to rule our a rubbing dust/heat shield or failing CV joint first. Both have the potential to creating a rubbing or clicking sound when turning in one direction but not the other.

My '05 tacoma is on all original bearings and joints. Now, my '99 saab is on its 3rd replacement bearing!

 

I think the bearings come in a sealed housing and are not serviceable. I asked Chris but he wasn't sure. Interested to hear what you find out.

 

Many people have replaced their bearings. Its tough to press the bearings in/out of the hub so most places sell the bearing and hub already assembeled.

I just purchased 2 hub/bearing assembelies from the Autozone for about $100 each.

 

WOW. Toyota in Calgary charged me $700 for ONE hub bearing assembly, then another $400 to install it. Was only just out of warranty too.... I hate toyota more and more every day

 

yeah I changed mne out at 40k. Bought the part at pep boys. Never buy from the dealer!

 

how would i go about checking the cv joint

 

just slide under your truck and look for the black, rubber, accordian looking things in your wheel. It's connected to your wheel. If the fins on that are touching, then its not a good angle.

 

Plan on buying the wheel bearing assembly and the hub unless you want to build a jig for a press to get them apart. Here's some more info:

Next time I have to replace one I'm buying the parts anywhere but Toyota, they charge a shit ton for the bearing assembly and hub.

 

Well i have the 3" OME on so i know they're at a bad angle. but i just put it on 2000 Miles ago. I just don't want to change the bearings if they're not bad.

Where do i purchase just the bearings because i think the auto parts stores only carry the whole assembly.

Has anyone changed rear wheel bearings and how difficult is it?

 

not necesarily... when the wheel bearing has just a slight hum you might not feel any slack when jacking it up. ive got 9k on the odo and my drver side wheel bearing is bad. no slop but bearing feels dry. might be a defective seaql and some muddy water got in there to hurry the wear process

 

Same here on my front left. When I go around sharp right handers the noise goes away. I'm getting a loud humming noise from the front left. I can feel the vibration on the floor at highway speeds.

 

Not sure if people know but if you tighten bearing when is becoming loose it will pro-long it. With almost 40K my bearing started feeling loose after the winter so as soon as its warm enough I will tighten them.

He's saying pop the dust cap off the hub/bearing on the front, pull the cotter pin and re-toque up the 35mm (36?) nut on the end of the cv shaft coming through the spindle/hub/bearing/knuckle. I'm not sure you need to but re-torquing it to factory specs won't hurt anything at least.

 

This only works on taper roller bearings. Ours are sealed, pressed-in bearings, and are non-serviceable. There is nothing to tighten.

 

Ours ARE tapered roller bearings man. Just unitized. The pre-load is set by the torque on the cv axle nut. You can re-torque it.

 

Here's an excellant thread on replacing the fronst wheel bearings. I'm currently in the process of doing this job now. I hoping to complete it on the weekend.
