Yep, me too. I was just up on Mt Taylor (11,000+ in elevation) to cut our Christmas tree (Colorado blue spruce) , and used my locker up and down a very rocky trail. I'm an archaeologist and use 4wd often. Not all of us are mall oriented truck owners.

As the OP who started this thread what feels like ages ago, its amazing to see how many people have shown up to rep their SR5. Love it. I was ready to pick up a new SR5, and a gently used TRD OR came on the market that I couldn't pass up. So I ended up not getting an SR5, but I was more than willing to.

Thinking of trading my '16 black SR5 for a '18 silver SR5. This black has to go.

I was new to Toyota when I bought the 3rd gen SR5.

I think it's a great capable truck, but technically not an SR5, since it doesn't have a 5 speed manual transmission.

It does have a 6 speed transmission and a 6 cylinder engine, just like most of the TRD's ( Toyota Racing Development).

I understand about the hood scoop, crawl control, rear locker, different suspensions, etc., but how do any of those features equate to "racing".

Shouldn't a TRD at the very least be tuned differently? Shouldn't TRD trucks have a different engine or something added to increase horsepower?

If it comes down to racing, don't see any difference between my SR5 and any of the TRD models.

I love the SR5. I had a 2003 4 banger AC for 14 years and would still have it if it wasn't totaled. I can't justify spending a lot on a vehicle that I'm gonna mod myself. I would love to be financially able to and envy those who can.

SR5 and TRD mean nothinf anymore. Only OffRoad and Pro mean anything in terms of functionality. The rest is all different levels of comfort options and looks.

All you probably need is an SR5 or SR 4x4. That's what I was first interested in, but then I saw all the awesome tech, locker, features of the OR and I couldn't resist. I figured I have the money and why not splurge a bit?

You work in movies? Sure hope you weren’t that production assistant kid waving a red t-shirt trying to close down HWY 2 for a unpermitted filming shoot - I locked my Gen 2 into 4-high and went around his stupid illegal road block and photobombed their shot as I drove past them! :) Over the two years I worked on that road, I had to ‘deal’ with several rogue film crews. The legal permitted ones were really good people though, and it was a pleasure working with them.

Sure love my new 2017 OR TRD - would never leave home without a 4x4 because I never know when it will be useful, even while just driving in L.A., and I love using it with all its capabilities to explore the desert on vacations and weekends and be able to go to all those amazing places made more accessible by it.

Took a photo of my truck yesterday because my wife asked me to.

Not a great photo, but it did occur to me the SR5 just looks clean, without all the visual chatter of the fender flares, vinyl and also because the chrome badges were removed.IMG_20171203_154212.jpg

    Just my opinion of course.

If I knew they were going to offer cement gray on all trims, I would have gotten a cement dcsb 4x4 and have close to paid off new truck by now lol.

I picked up a new 2017 SR5 AC 4x4 with a V6, tow package and appearance package for $31,900 out the door which met all my needs. It’s a lot of truck for the money.

SR5s are an under represented truck on tacoma world. For me the only thing the trds had that I wanted was the rear locker. I have a decent tech package (bluetooth, sirius radio, weather info, navigation if I had a smart phone). I do plan to wheel it aggressively, but I'm used to a 05 dodge dakota so its light years ahead of my previous truck's performance. So far the SR5 has not disappointed me.

The SR5, the SR do not disappoint. The most complaints on this forum are from OR owners, all kinds of issues and problems.

    I wonder why?

You don't hear a peep out of the limited owners either. Out of the TRD line, only the least complaints are from the sport trim.

This is just my observation based on a unscientific poll, your results may vary :D

    Cheers!
