So the steel wheels I run on the trails are 17x8 with a 4 inch backspace and barely rub my calipers. Is there a non spacer solution to prevent the rub? I honestly really like these cheap ass wheels and I would feel WAY more comfortable running them(and not having to drag an extra set of wheels with me)knowing I'm not running a spacer. I saw Wheelers Offroad had steel 1/4 inch spacers for this reason but anything that's only $5 just seems sketchy to me. Thoughts?

I considered those myself, but decided against it because they would reduce the amount of thread available by 0.25”. I don’t really need them though, unlike you.

Yep ,doing the ome all around with 886s up front and the headstrong leaf pack .

On a side note anyone have any use for a 3 inch spacer lift and some 2 inch blocks ?

 

Those wheels never balanced well. Took them to discount 3-4 times but never could get it right.

 

Shave your calipers down a bit. Angle grinder and 36 grit flap disk, just very little at a time. I'm surprised 17's are touching them

There's a few tricks to get hard to balance wheels to come out good. Sounds like the tech probably didn't want to take the time to deal with it. Oh well. Anyhow, haven't seen a pic of the new ride, what's up with that?

It's just the wheel design. Basic D window steel wheels and the face of the wheel is sort of concave and that's what touches the caliper.

 

I’m with Chris shave the calipers down with a flap disk. How ever Please be very careful doing this as there is a fluid passage on the outer side of the caliper. It is possible to grind this area to thin and have it crack under heavy braking pressure. I personally have gotten a little carried away on a caliper before and had one crack on my trail rig. The rib circled in Red is a hollow fluid passage.

Cragar soft 8s 17x8 4.75” back space do the same thing on my ‘16. They fit my FJ perfectly but not the Tacoma. The Tacoma caliper has a touch more meat on it.

 

Thanks for all the info! I feel like someone could make money making a slimmer aftermarket caliper that still functions well. I wanted to throw the big tires/wheels on for my drive up to Austin and C&C but I've always been real sketchy driving them on the road because of the fact I've had a spacer fail before.

Ugh, $1000 deductible. I thought it was $500. I'm gonna end up paying for this bumper all out of pocket. I doubt there's that much damage. Effing insurance. Just legalized gambling.
