I would love to have some natural titted bird draped across a full carbon fiber superbike back in a mag, or pick up a mag like machine gunner and have some chick holding holding a M240E wearing next to nothing.......I would also love to be able to call a spade a spade and "diagonal cutters" dykes again without some shitball getting a hissy fit over sexism and exploitation.....

There's truth here. Just dropped my truck at a new shop (new to me, but it's been in town forever I think). Nobody seems to be able to figure out why I'm on my 3rd third member in a year and a half. I walked into their "lobby" and all I could smell was oil/grease. That's a good sign to me. If they truly work on trucks the place should smell like it. All the mechanics in the shop wore old school blue denim cover-alls and had dirty hands. Their so called "service writer" looks and talks like an old grease monkey.

Kinda like if you ever have to call 911.. you want the paramedic who's a former combat medic... you want the officer who's a former combat vet... you want the folks showing up who won't bat an eyelash at whatever danger you need help with.

Reading the comments from the pro techs in this thread have confirmed what I've long suspected. Thanks for sounding off.

I've got in trouble for saying fuck in the shop and the customer in the lobby heard me. Oh do a customer has virgin ears now? The reason it happened is a pry bar slipped and caught me in the jaw. That didn't feel good. They try to refer to me as a technician, No I'm a god damn mechanic. I don't buy into this PC bullshit. I still call diagnal cutters dikes, a little piece of plastic used as a mounting point is called a titty, I have a whole box of male and female electrical connectors.

Folks, Don't let what is said here sway you from going to your dealer. They do have a purpose and there is good work to be had from them, as long as you understand that the majority only do by the OEM book. For recalls and warranty, no better place, even the body shops are pretty good and your insurance rarely questions why you took it there, even though the "kids" at the dealer lack real world mechanic skills, you at least know that they have the latest in updates and software.

If you need mods, have mods, or are aftermarket in any way.....best to call or stop by and ask BEFORE you schedule a service.
Even though most of y'all are fairly well educated in machines, A bit of advice from a mechanic that used to specialize in race performance.........MAKE SURE YOU TELL THE SERVICE WRITER EVERY MODIFICATION YOU HAVE MADE!!!! make sure they put it on the ticket. It helps not only people like me, but, it helps diagnostics and cost.

Some WILL do anything and everything, others won't even put in OEM performance parts.

Careful. Some of those "male" connectors identify as female connectors. :rofl:You can in fact couple two male connectors with solder after all.

Being in a customer service / sales industry myself I get it. My customers don't want to hear me curse. I have to wear slacks and a polo shirt at the least. We call our service guys "techs".

You're right though. I'd be afraid to walk into the gardening department at the hardware store and ask for a hoe.

Personally, I don't care if a piece of plastic is called a titty, or there's a fitting called a nipple, or if my mechanic slips and says "fucking A". So long as he/she treats me personally with respect, and treats my vehicle with respect, I don't care if he smells bad, cusses, chews, washes his hands, etc. I'm there to get my shit fixed. But, I also understand that a man in a suit and tie standing in a court room is not going to talk the same way as a mechanic in a shop who's trying to pry loose a rusted bolt under a rusted out vehicle. That's reality.

I am not cool with the waiting area smelling like the shop too much in the way of toxic smells and people do bring kids with them, there should be 2 completely separate rooms, no damn windows either. your service writer should have a background in repair, the mechanics should not be covered in grease, but, not doctor clean either.
Mechanics should be left alone to do what we do, most of us mechanics work in back because we can't stand to talk to idiots.

Shop should be clean and uncluttered, think Gas Monkey Garage, organized, clean, and NO CUSTOMERS IN THE SHOP AREA!!!

I'm not sure I want a combat vet as a cop though..........someone that has "experience" in the world.......combat soldiers statistically do not make the best cops....at least those that have not decompressed from combat. Agree with the combat medic point.....they will keep your ass alive.

Or no waiting rooms at all. A shop should be we will call you when it's done. I can fix it fast or I can fix it right, but I'm not doing both if your standing there watching me like I'm a fish in a tank.

It’s no mystery that dealerships in general have a long history of over charging for services that a private mechanic can complete for a significantly lesser cost. Like I already said, if this specific dealership is not willing to do the work then they probably shouldn’t. I didn’t bring my mechanical abilities into the discussion, the first guy that quoted me did by asking me amount my mechanical history and insinuating that I only type on a keyboard and don’t turn wrenches.

In the end, the OP made a thread and asked for opinions so I, like others, gave mine. Whether anyone likes it, I can’t control and I don’t really care. The OP can read what everyone says and make a decision for himself

I can't remember who said it, might have been Rob Muzzy...( yeah, I've been around a long time)

Fixed fast, Fixed right, or Fixed cheap...which do you want?

If it is right and fast, it ain't cheap, if it is fast and cheap, it ain't right

I had this one bat shit crazy customer standing behind my bay while I was replacing the coil spring isolators in her old shitty blazer because somebody else forgot to put them back in. Every time I took something apart she was like what the fuck are you doing? That's not how the other guy did it. I eventually lost my shit and said do I look like the other fucking guy? Obviously he didn't do it right, that's why it's here. Then she walked into my bay and scooched her way between me and the truck and starting taking picture with a disposable camera ( no idea they still made those) I had to tell her about 100 times to get out of the shop. She finally left for about two minutes then came back in. I just dropped my tools and sat on top of my box. When she left I started working on it again. When she came back into my shop I dropped my shirt and went and had a nice long lunch, then I came back, grabbed another ticket and pulled it into the next bay and worked on that one while she was standing there giving me the evil eye. Ever since then my I-give-a-fuck-ometer has been on empty. I'll fix the car right and correctly, if the customer is some joker like that mental case then it gets put on the back burner. No shortage of broken cars out there.
