Ive been looking for a second gen 4 door 4x4 tacoma for a while and I was wondering if I should continue to stick it out until I find a great offroad package truck or if I should just get a nice sport that comes up. Im going to be changing out the coil overs so im not too interusted in the "offroad" shocks that come on the truck. The only major difference I see is the fact that the offroad package comes with a rear locker and the sport does not. Is there any other differences between the two trucks? I do plan to take the truck offroad and lift it (possibly long travel somewhere down the line) so I am going to be using the truck. Do you guys who have a trd offroad actually engage the rear locker ever or is it more of a backup?

I wouldn't worry about coils and shocks if you plan on switching them out. The biggest difference, as you've mentioned is the locker. Some other minor differences are: trd sport has hood scoop, painted mirrors, matching grille and bumper. I have a sport, I don't do any major wheeling (just dirt trailers, light climbing, etc.) If you plan on doing some serious wheeling I'd probably go with the off-road, if you plan on doing light to moderate wheeling, imho, I don't think it matters much. Just my 2 cents.

Personally, I hate the scoop, color matched rear bumper and color matched mirrors, so I bought an OR and put the color matched door handles on it. Also, I think you don't get the overhead compass and temp with the sport.

If you like the scoop and want a LSD which is better for snow and on road driving then sport. If you dont like the scoop and want a locker get a offroad. Those are literally the only differences. Especially if you are going to be changing the shocks ect to aftermarket. You so get the temp and compass with the sport just like the offroad. The only difference other than looks is the LSD vs Locker

Be mindful that certain years regardless of being a Sport or OR, have overhead compass/temp, or rearview mirror compass/temp, or it's in the HU as part of Entune and depends on HD radio signal.

Also sports prior to 09 has mechanical LSD in the rear, as opposed to 10+ using a brake actuated LSD.

I like my color matched grille surround, bumpers, and handles, plus the hood scoop so I went sport.

Yeah I would consider this a pretty big difference as well.

To consider also is if you get a Sport cheap enough you can add lockers and have the best of all of it.

It’s what I did... I was hell bent on an OR for the locker and ATRAC because it’s what I had in my FJ. Found a Sport for well under my budget and added lockers.

2014 and 2015 models won’t have the temp or compass in the mirror. Easy enough to add one aftermarket. Maybe I missed someone mention it but you can’t get the much better looking and more practical (for daily use) 6’ bed in a double cab OR. :stirthepot:

You sure about that? Maybe in Canada. Or maybe you are referring to 3rd Gen

EDIT: Nevermind, I misread the first part of your post! "can't"
