What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Finally got the goddamn front differential out! It's funny my friend and I muscled it for a good hour trying to get it out yesterday but it didn't budge. Today I tried @drr's method of rotating it forward and it dropped out instantly.

I was going get the rear locking diff but it was gone. I saw it on the counter of the cashier with a return tag on it. Must have been bad.

 

Decided to buy some studded snow tires 265/70/16 General Arctic. I have a strange feeling winter will be shit this year.

 

We still don’t have any snow this year...

 

Anyone ever tried using the 150amp alternators from the sequoias?

 

We had snow but it all melted. I figure the cost of tires are still cheaper than damage or damage that requires a claim. With any luck, it will be like buying a snowmobile, and it won't snow now that i've spent the money.

Depends on the year, some look like a close fit others completely different.

 

Hmm, def worth a look. Will have to continue this investigation next yr, so many people asking for the impossible out of me this xmas....

 

Specs say breaking point is 9 Tons/20,500 LBs, gave it a shot as its a brand I've never hard of but the quality appears to be top notch...

I tried pulling mine in with a ratchet strap then clamping it down. Once I released the strap it pushed the bed rails out enough that I couldn't close the tailgate. I try not to look to closely at it.

 

After 6 months my ARB would intermittently not lock up and just blow air out the breather. I'll be giving them a ring tomorrow for a shipping label to send it in to look at. Hopefully they take my word that something is wrong and rebuild it. As it sits right now it seems fine to be working.

 

I always thought you had to press the bearings out and everything so you just have the spindle itself. With nothing else attached. That's why I've been holding back on doing this. Is that what you did? It looks like you welded the gussets on, while everything everything was still attached. Every place I've called, said you have to have the bare spindle. But I might be getting mixed up with this fab shop that has gusseted spindles done already and you get avset and give them your old ones. Which in that case you would have to press the bearings out.

All we did we drop the spindle through the UCA. I’d imagine it would have been easier to weld on a bench but no. We hit it as it layed after disconnecting the uca.

 

Would running the higher Amp alternator make it idle nicer?

 

I welded mine on a bench, but with the bearings in. Hasn't presented a problem yet.

Just don't ask if you need to preheat them or not.
