I guess it depends on your circumstances, but if they are pretty much new looking, paying near full price might be worth it just to avoid the crazy long lead times. :D

Sometimes I regret not getting the steel ones, as the steel is thinner than aluminum and I had originally planned to cram a soft roll-up toneau cover between then. Definitely doesn't fit on mine, plus I didn't take into account manufacturing tolerances which adds a little more width to it as well. Oh well.

I went steel. I can't justify the extra cash for alum. The shipping weight was only 100 pounds, I recon it wont affect me much. If anything it'll improve the way the truck rides.

I'm looking at the CBI, RCI, and KBVOODOO for my Gen3. Between the 3 of them my favorite is the CBI but it costs nearly double the others with Aluminum and black coating. RCI and Voodoo are attractive but I'm concerned about the visibility of the 12 inch and 10 inch heights. Is this a justified concern? Hard to tell without trying one and thats clearly not an option!

So far in my researching options, the CBI seems to be the right height for my needs ending just at the level of the top of the rear window. Everything else I've looked at is just a bit too short.

Well having the CBI on mine, I can tell you that visibility is NOT a concern. You have to lean left or right to see the side of the rack in any of the mirrors (which I do occasionally to ease my paranoia of finding my shovel missing). The top of the rack is only slightly visible from the center rear-view mirror.

Thanks for the feedback Arlaghan. That was my guess on the CBI. BTW, On the shovel etc, can you mount inside?
Can any of the RCI or KBvoodoo 10-inch owners comment on the visibility impact they are experiencing?

    Thanks all

You definitely see the rack, but you can see around it too.

You could, but it would require some stand-offs or brackets to clear the C-channel uprights. You'd also have to consider the bolt head protruding on the outside as to whether or not they would interfere with Roto-pax that get flush mounted to the outside. Something like this is on my to-do list.

The larger CVT tents say they require 3 rails for mounting purposes. Looks like RCI might be a good bet for me? I don’t intend to always leave it on either.

Something to keep in mind: the tent I have is the Mt Shasta. Fits pretty well on the bed rack. If you go bigger (Rainier or what not) you will have considerable overhang, especially on a rack that isn't full bed length (or angles back like the CBI). If the rack is lower than the roof, you don't have as much room for centering it. Just things to take into account. Good luck with whatever you choose! Definitely a game changer.

Appreciate it! What would you think I’d be best running if I were to buy the Rainier? I’ve got 2 kids plus myself and my wife. All pro seems to be pretty long. Didn’t think about the CBI angle either.

Others have bought the Rainier here on TW and lived with the overhang without any reported issues. Especially if you plan to get an after market bumper with a swing out - it evens out the look. I've got two kids and a wife and I can say if my kids were much older, the Shasta would definitely be too small - with both under the age of 6, it's a tight fit. However, with the annex, you have lots of room below for a folding cot underneath the ladder - we've done it several times.

Whichever way you go, it's a lot of fun for the family. Do you plan to camp in the winter? If not you might want to wait until around April/May when there will likely be another group buy for CVT.

I really like the looks of the CBI, but don't like that it completely covers the entire side rail on both sides, eliminating the ability to make use of anything else attached there. Also would have to relocate my CB antenna mount which I'm not entirely inclined to do at the moment.

My RCI rack is doing great. Has got a lot of compliments and questions everywhere I go
