Finally got my frame recall letter! Here's hoping this doesn't turn into the nightmare some of y'all have had. Any tips before I take it to the dealer?

I just got mine as well. I could use some advice on the matter as well. I don't think my frame is bad enough for the replacement...yet.

If I wait as long as possible (12 years from the date of first use) I could be covered through September of 2021 according to the warranty enhancement program details.

The other option is taking it in now for the corrosion resistant compound. :notsure:

Mines got some significant rust... especially the cross members. And 2019 would be my last year eligible

My 2 cents here. If you go in now and they deem it good they put crc crap on it.
They will literally put the shit on thick and heavy to cover everything. It will drip in your drive for 2 days and end up in places you didn’t want it. You won’t know how bad it is until it’s too late.
If your rust is as you say I’d encourage the rust growth and wait till the end.

I would avoid the crc not sure if you bring it in now and refuse the crc what the outcome would be in 2021. I think they would try to deny you due to the refusal.

I had maintained my frame!! their crc crap made it so you can’t see the spots in need of attention until it blisters. Fluid film doesn’t stick well to it I’ve been using lps3 rust inhibitor to maintain.
I spend a lot of time under the truck wanted to keep it till 500k it’s a hell of a battle now I don’t think my frame will be bad enough to replace in the time frame.
    Pretty well screwed myself.

Also a side note here I’m pretty sure you don’t get any extra warranty like the Canadians do or like they did here in the past with the crc. But they need to warranty the crc job for a year so putting if off till the end letting them coat or replace. If they coat you get another year I’d say.

It's not a recall--and I agree 110% with not going for the goop until you near the end of the warranty enhancement period...

I wouldn’t let them undercoat it and seal the frame as they wanted to do on my 98. I was afraid it would continue to rust at a faster pace.

I received my letter today. Pretty useless for me though since we don't have rust issues here.

For what its worth,I had my 2005 inspected and it was deemed a pass and they under coated it,sold it to a friend that had work done at another dealer ship 4 years later and the frame failed,it is now getting the new frame

How bad is your frame? Is there already scaling and lifting if so bring it in show them if they want to crc agree but spend a Saturday on your own prior and remove all the surface rust prior to bringing it in. If you have huge flakes then I’d wait for now i guess

If the recall is like the first gen one, I would get it coated. Toyota was able to deny frame replacements down the road if you didn't have it inspected and undercoated in a certain window of time. Not sure if that was spelled out in that recall or this one, but I would personally follow all of their instructions if they give any.

Where are the first/most common places the rust/corrosion begins? Is it logical to assume a 2010 will begin its failure with the rest? Is there a cut-off VIN on the 2010s? Haven't had mine long...trying to catch up on the issue.Thanks...

Received my second and final frame letter a month or so ago and still hadn’t done my leaf spring upgrade, I️ took the truck in for the leaf springs and asked them to double check my frame. About ten minutes in the shop they came and took me back to my truck and told me they weren’t doing the springs, I️ was like great now what, then he preceded to tell me the frame failed and was ordering the new frame immediately. It’s been a month or so still waiting for frame to come in.

At the risk of sounding too cynical of the local stealership I have to say I don't really trust them to replace my frame. For the rear leaf TSB they had me bring it in before close on Friday and leave it all weekend. The reasoning was that they want wanted to spread the parts out and have plenty of room. Meanwhile, I put OME springs, King Shocks, and new hardware on in about 2 hours without a lift and with a buddy. Have a look at the process of swapping the frame here. If they wanted a weekend a plenty of room for some leafs then they'll need a month and an empty warehouse to do the frame.

Nor do I really want them messing with my aftermarket upgrades. I've heard horror stories about Toyota trying to align Total Chaos lowers. And that's just aligning them. I don't want my toys getting all jacked up because some tech is trying to get my frame done in the amount of time allotted for the job. Nor do I want Toyota calling me and telling me a list of parts I have to buy so they can put my truck back together.

I guess I will take it in and make sure that rust isn't an issue. If it is, i'll take it to a better dealership to have it swapped. I'm not in a Cold Weather climate according to Toyota, so I won't get the coating anyway. New frame or nothing.

Is there a tl;dr for this recall? Is my 2011 in this?

It is not a recall, it is a "warranty enhancement program" brought about by Toyota's settling a class action suit. It covers 2005-2010 vehicles only--however if your 2011 MY truck came off the assembly line in 2010 it may squeak through.

    What is a "tl;dr"?

Mostly miscellaneous electronic mods.... -2 spare Electrical fuse blocks hard wired to the battery with a key on relay. -Hard Wired Radar detector over rearview mirror. -2 Dual Whelen Avenger blue LED emergency lights, one on each side of the rearview mirror. -EP911 Blue LED Light Bar & Traffic Advisor, Rear Windows. -4 corner amber strobes in stock lights. -Hardwired RF Scanner with external speaker under center console. -Huskyliner front splash guards -Fireband 2 way radio in center console. -Herculiner painted on hitch and skid plate. -Switch to power one 12v socket when truck is off. -AntiDark LED strip under hood with switch. -Timbren Rubber Springs - Rear -MBRP Offroad Cat-Back with Resonator -Duratrac's -Provisor -Color matched hood bug shield
Friend of mine was claiming they denied her 06 a frame recall because she accepted the preventive coating earlier on. After much arguing and many calls to corporate the truck got a new frame but not without a lot of effort on her part.

I’m waiting until it’s real bad before I take it in.

At the risk of repeating myself like a muttering old fool (which I cannot deny) dealers are just independently owned franchise operations, same as MacDonald's. They are not factory agents or factory representatives, and actually have little financial interest in warranty work or recalls--they may make a bit but mostly they break even., Toyota sets the reimbursements to see to that.

A further complication is that the warranty/recall/TSB we receive are "contracts" between we owners and Toyota, not the dealer who is only a contracted (by Toyota) service agent; and who unfortunately is also a new vehicle owners first point of contact when there is a problem.

Most often that contact Is via a "service advisor", who can be some of the dimmest "bulbs on the string"--this either a fact or feigned, I have been often not sure. In any event what they are not is experts in contract interpretation, and often not even experts in auto repair.

My point in all of this is that the WEP notice we have received constitutes the entire contractual agreement between us and Toyota re: the 2005-2010 frame rust issue. Anything not stated or not referenced in that document does not exist as part of our contract with Toyota. A dealer may wish to insert some proviso, however they cannot do so with any legal standing.

So if they try to mess with you call Toyota and cut-out the middle-man...

Got my recall letter. Thankfully I live in Texas and my frame still looks brand new.
