If you are not going too upgrade at least 8-10 years,I would really think it would be a waste, also I would not touch an 06 as headgasket is a $3000 fix.

Last chance to change my mind. I am trading trucks today at one. I want a new toy and a 5.7 to put in it. Already looking for parts trucks and engines.

4.7 1st gen would be sweet but if you want more space then the 2nd gen is the way to go. Good luck!

I started Tacoma journey about 5 years ago with a 1996 taco with 250,000 miles. I traded up to this point and I do not see me stopping. I would like more room though.

Yeah I love my 4.7 in my 06 Tundra and can only imagine it would be awesome in the lighter 1st gen. But since owning the Tundra I find the 1st gens way too small inside. Love to hire you to do a 3.4 swap in a 3.0 80’s 4runner. That’s always been my dream.

Do it. The first gen's are awesome, and a 4.7 is even more awesome, but I have to admit I love the second gens, starting with mine, also a Radiant Red. The second gen is a fantastic platform for building and modifying, and the market for such products is endless.

When you have an idea like that, I think it is important to follow it even if it takes years and a piece at a time. It is good for you! For me it is a bit of addiction, or the self gratification I enjoy.

That being said, if you find a 5.7 and swap it... I wanna watch, I wanna read about it, I wanna touch it

Same. 06, 258,900 miles. Neither myself nor the previous owner ever had any problems with the head gaskets, let alone the engine at all.

'05 4.0 here, with ~180k on the clock, never had a problem with the head gaskets.

After almost ~12 years since Toyota phased in the updated head gasket for the 1GR on the assembly line, and people here are still scared that maybe they'll buy a truck with an OG gasket and it'll fail. Y'all are really scared off by a gasket? If it's lasted this many years/miles, at this point you can't blame its' failure solely on being sub-par quality. It's not 2007 anymore.

Fix it when it breaks, and move on with life. Once you replace it, it's no longer the "failure prone" original design.

Well head gaskets are a moot point if your going with a 5.7 swap.

    Sounds like an awesome project.
