Road and air noise coming in through pressure relief vents behind rear seats

I bet it did. I know my 04 had cabin vents.

I think it may be a safe assumption that 100% of modern vehicles do, you may not know where they are, but they are there.

Edit: My 2000 Elenatra, 2000 Sonoma, 90 something Crx, wife's 90 something Silhouette, daughters 99 Civic, other daughters Focus and before that her Skylark etc all had them. just as an FYI. My point is I have yet to work on a car that does not have cabin vents, going back to 70 model vehicles.

 

They may be there somewhere, but they are not in the rear wall of the cabin as on the 3rd gens shown above...

 

My 97 had 1 or 2 airbags. My 2011 had side airbags but I don't think they were added until later years of the 2nd gen. I am pretty sure my 2011 had 1 rear vent that was smaller than the two in the 3rd Gen. This pic is from a 2007 - don't see any rear vents. not my photo.

 

My 2016 double cab short bed off road has been ridiculously loud from the get-go. Maybe I'm just getting crotchety in my older years but the road noise is absolutely ridiculous. I've been planning to Rammatt the area behind the seats and cover the vents at some point.

 

My 89 4runner has cabin vents, and no airbags.

 

For 2nd gens they are vertically oriented further outboard. Reason you don’t see any in your pic is they are hiding back behind the c-pillar trim that’s still in place. I actually think they were further hidden than that, there is an airspace between part of the inner c pillar and outer c pillar and I think that’s where they hide interior wise.

 

yep - you are right. Now that you mention it, i think I remember seeing the vertical vent. Here they are on a 1st gen. Not sure why they redesigned and enlarged them other than maybe additional airbags? but they seem to be where the road noise is coming from.

 

I don't know why they might have changed, but more than once I had to reopen and close my door because it didn't shut completely with the windows closed.

Not a big deal, but the air path out of the cab might have changed?

 

Pretty sure it has to do with exhaust. By pressurizing the cabin, you are always pushing air out of the cab. You will be less likely to suck any exhaust into the cabin and have the associated risks of CO poisoning.

 

That, and even with the fan off, there is air coming in due to cowl induction. This keeps the air moving and the humidity down. Without some type of outlet vent, it would be like driving with the recirculation button on all the time, stuffy with fogged windows, etc.

Then again, look at the trouble that Ford is having with the current gen Explorers. Even with outlet vents and airflow, CO was leaking in from badly sealed grommets.

 

You sir, are certifiable crazy, can't believe that you would remove your bed to fix a noise problem. How wild & crazy. I may attempt the same procedure.

 

True statement! The noise has been reduced but I still have some. My next target would be to place foam around the seat hook openings into the cab (through the rear plastic panels/ bins).

I would start there before removing bed.

 

Have already applied silicone caulk, Dynamat, 1/2" ensolite and convoluted foam to my Access Cab rear seat panel. Better, still no joy. About to replace rear seat panel with:

interesting material. Panel is being replaced to gain 2.5 inches of space for our dog. Will it reduce noise? Will it inhibit vent?

 

I notice it but it does not bother me yet. Coming from daily driving a soft top jeep though so I may just be more desensitized to road noise than others.

 

So after reading this, i guess its safe to say there's basically NOTHING you can do about this. I have a sub and i hear the vents shuttering whenever the bass hits.

I added sound deadening panels to the back wall and foam over the vents. Helped reduce the noise.

 

This post is quite old - but I was wondering what the long term result was ???

 

My cabin is still much quieter than when I purchased the truck. I have since also added an exhaust so I do have more "noise" in the cab. With that said, I do not notice any wind & traffic noise while idling at a stop sign/light.

 

Hearing loss is my friend in this case
