Meanwhile they now use 2nd gens in lieu of Land Cruisers for anti-aircraft roles (click for full-size pic):

Me too. Coop materials, organic grain, fencing, electricity...

    But, there's a payoff:

And to be fair, they only really eat grain during the winter. The rest of the time they're finding enough while they're free-ranging that they hardly touch the grain bucket.

When i was a kid we had a coop that would sustain the family. Now I dwell in a municipality that doesn't allow chickens on our lot size... and they'd be lost to predation anyway.

So we buy from a local hippy farm. Same with our grass fed ranged beef, pork, and lamb.

I have my own for multiple reasons. I live in the country so I have the space, they're entertaining to watch, the eggs taste better, they provide fertilizer/compost for the gardens, they cut down the number of garden pests considerably, and they keep the local tick population under control.

Yeah you don't want those PITA ticks giving you the vegan. My buddy has chickens so I get eggs from him.

It's unbelievable. When we first bought the house we were picking 3-4 ticks a week off of the dog and the cat. Since we've had the chickens we haven't found a single tick on the dog, and the cat has had a lot less (he roams off of our property, so he picks them up and brings them home  ). But as soon as they get let out in the morning the birds beeline it for the treeline and spend all day kicking leaves over looking for bugs.
