Had mine almost a year now.

In that time I've had one update for shifting which fixed all my issues. I thought it was low fluid but was just shit mapping. Fluid was fine.
    No diff problems
    no shuddering engine.

    Love mine.

17 DCLB offroad. It's pretty nice and I like having a truck. However the transmission and engine don't seem to know each other very well. Good power but the trans doesn't know about it. Terrable fuel mileage! Other than that I have an odd click noise in the dash that's making me nuts. If I had it to do over again I would give a much closer look at other options. Let's hope that toyota resale value I hear so much about holds up.

That is good to hear. I have a 5 lug so I have no top end and barely any torque lol. The one I test drove was a 2016 before all the updates and TSB's so it is entirely possible it acts completel different.

Forgot to mention I’ve hauled cattle, boats and even a 21ft bunkhouse and although the mpg suffered horribly it made the trips without hiccup. They’re good little trucks and are pretty roomy and capable if you remember it’s not a full-size!

Oh I know that. My 2015 Ram is a Crew Cab huge space also MPG takes a dive when towing.

How did the brakes perfrom while towing? Any noticeable fade?

I've read a few horror stories on here, but my 3rd gen has been great. I'm just under 20k miles in and haven't had to do anything outside of the scheduled maintenance. I've never driven the auto transmission though, so I can't comment on the reported shifting issues.

I love my truck. No issues at all. It is a vehicle afterall so to me it starts with how it drives. I’m a nut case on winding roads and absolutely can’t stand to be behind a f-ing Prius. It is tight in the corners, good power to gas mileage to pass the Prius, but comfortable and not wimpy and looks great. Go drive each build as they have different suspensions. Hit a speed bump at about 40 mph on angle and do a hard breaking manouver accross double railroad tracks. The problem then becomes not if you will like it, but how to decide which one to buy.

When I hauled 4 cow/calf pairs it was a little sketchy when slowing down from 70mph to a stop rather quickly, but I honestly should have invested in a brake controller for loads like that. But for everyday driving and light loads they didn’t have any perceived fade.

Very funny. Only Dakota worth a damn was late 90s and early 2000's before all the changes.
Anyway I don't see the resemblance.

Possibly a different pad would do better than the OE on heavy towing but I'm also guessing you were close to or over GVW max which tells me the brakes are pretty strong.

I've had my 17 for almost a year and I have had no issues. It is a great truck. I haven't had a huge problem with the transmission set up. I've been in the habit of dropping it into S5 when I'm on rolling hills and want to use cruise control. Other than that, the powertrain works great. I've seen no indications of my truck being rushed or poorly constructed. My last two vehicles have been Mopar (09 Ram 1500, 13 Charger SRT8) and the build quality of my Tacoma is a lot better.
