Need new timing belt at 165k miles

anyone have recommendations of where to go in bakersfeild or South Bay CA area? I wanted to do it my self since Iv done everything myself so far but ppl have convinced me to just get it done so I don’t ruin my motor 3.4L thanks in advance also if you don’t mind roughly how much it cost with a water pump thanks!

 

You can do it yourself and not ruin your motor. Here's a couple videos you can use. In the first video we struggled to get the timing belt on and I ended up using a trick with a plastic bicycle tire lever to get the belt onto the last pulley. In Part 2, we show a much easier way to get the belt on so use that technique instead.

Sounds like the people you've been listening to are unskilled naysayers.

It does require a bit of patience and attention to detail.

Plan to have all parts on hand, a sheltered area to do it in in case of weather issues, have all the tools on hand, have alternative transportation available if it takes longer than you thought. Allow yourself 2x the time the readings/video you watch calls for. You may not need it, but you also don't want to be in a rush.

You can do it. If you're interested in saving a few hundred clams. And with that attention, you'll have a more through job than a shop just interested in getting in and out.

 

I did mine myself when my water pump ground itself into a lockup condition. The factory belt lasted 133k miles.

As for cost, I purchased every thing from Rock Auto at one time for about $365 shipped. Water pump, timing belt, tension pulley, idle pulley, accessory belts, cam seals, valve cover gaskets, and radiator hoses.

All parts were quality brands and the water pump was the same one used from the factory.

I had to make a simple jig to hold the crank pulley so I could remove and retorque the pulley bolt. It also worked to hold the cam sprockets when I removed those bolts.

Figured I was already water pump deep, I may as well change the cam seals while I'm in there.

 

Do it yourself.
Even easier if it's a manual tranny!

Yeah I like that idea cause this would be the only thing in my truck I didn’t do myself so far and I don’t like putting faith in a shop that they didn’t make any short cuts. Well I’ll look into getting it done at the parents house as mine is prolly going to snow soon bad timing on my part haha

It's really not that bad and it's worth the time if you have the tools.
