off the line, the gen 3 3.5L is a fuckin dog. It doesn't make power until after 3000 rpm. The 4L makes a lot of power from 1500 thru to 3500. I rarely rev past that in my truck.

Mr Dangle! How the heck are ya. No, I'm not through gen 3 bashing until Toyota puts a proper truck motor in the Tacoma. (Or at least offers an option)
You saw my video buddy. By the way... can the Gen 3 even spin its tires?

It's not that the peak number decreased, it's that the torque peak is now 600 rpm HIGHER. Torque needs to be down low. Also a 6,000RPM HP peak is not that useable either, unless you drive with your foot flat to the floor all the time.

    I never saw a video.

On my stock tires I could, not with my new tires though. I am most saddened.

Also, your not bashing Toyota, your trolling owners.

I posted the video on that discussion @Lt. Dangle

    Torque spins tires.:burnrubber:

I have nothing against you or any other Gen3 owner. I apologize if I have made it seem so.
My beef has always been with Toyota. I really wanted the new truck but could not get past the power train.

This is pretty much it. The majority of people who traded/sold the their trucks went fullsize. Some people here wound up with the 4runner but those who actually needed a bed went full size. I didn't see anyone else here go from a tacoma to a colorado.

You did indeed. I had to go hunt it down, but credit where credit is due. Next time I have my trailer loaded I'll see what I can do. Honestly, the only thing I wish the third gen had that the second gen has is the 5 speed auto. I have no issues with the shifting in my truck, I just think the deep double OD gears are stupid. One is enough, but that's not they way we are headed unfortunately. While I'm wishing, I wouldn't mind the rear gear on the manual tranny truck either.

I'm glad you like your truck, I like mine too. The difference between us is that I don't go into the second gen forums pointing out what I perceive as flaws with them. I've owned a 4liter, it was okay, I just prefer the 3.5. Different strokes.

Did not neutral drop. Did that once in my 20s with a 75 Monte Carlo and took out the spider gears. Ouch!
Not sure what the click was.

I loved the set up here. hahaha. @kahanabob I am sure you were just politely asking, but it looks like you were ready to pounce and say something like, "Then you don't know /don't understand how much worse a 3rd gen is if you didn't own a 2nd Gen." .....but then it didn't go your way....

Every time I see these threads (this one's old) I am so confused by the hate on the 3rd Gen. :( I LOVE mine, little putsy down low but I knew that because I drove it first. NO RAGERTS

no. i do not pounce. just like input from those that come from 2nd gen to 3rd gen and compare. i came from a 2008 4.0 and see a difference. happy with my 2016 especially after i did the ECT on all the time mod.

I've never owned or even driven a second gen, but there's no way it's the stump puller some of these "other sub forum" guys make it out to be. It's still just a small NA V6 lol - nothing overly special.

A lot of the 2GR-FKS' problems stem from the horrendous OEM calibration Toyota decided to saddle it with. Yep, even tuned it takes a bit of spinning up to get some real power. There's noticeably more down low and certainly below 3000 now that Mat has changed things up though. Not bench racing here either, I've been running the tune long enough to know (it's not perfect yet, but it's getting there). I also owned a '12 RAV4 with the 2GR-FE variant, and it would take off like a scalded cat (yeah yeah, insert van/SUV motor bullshit here).

And yes, I spent an extra ~$800 to get the truck running "normally".

Meh, the 4.0 will probably be extinct after the T4R gets it's next redesign anyway. Good luck shaming Toyota into thinking the 2GR was a bad choice with factories churning out 3rd Gens at the rate they are.

To each his own, I just think what you're "doing" is a waste of time.

Hello Frank. I'm glad you're happy with your truck. I wanted the new truck but couldn't get past the lack of bottom end. My truck is for work which includes pulling a trailer. The 1GR-FE was made for work trucks and has most of its power from 1500 to 4500 although I don't much go past 3500. The 2GR-, which is a great motor, makes most of it's power from 3000 to 6000. Yes, the 3.5 has more hp but it's not available in the power band where traditionally trucks need the power. The 1GR is not a V8... but it's not far off.

    Diesel GM twin then?

I'll have to admit the target audience for the 3G seems to be more for the "adventure" crowd than the work the ball sack off the truck crowd.

    3G?
I don't need to downgrade to a GM. My '13 will last me several years. Maybe my business will grow and i'll need a bigger truck. For now I'm happy.

Happy with your 2nd gen, I am happy for you. They are great trucks from what I hear.

Test drove a 3rd gen once and now on a mission to bash them until Toyota changes something, really?
