I need to try Makers Mark. You might try Monkey Shoulder scotch or Jameson Cask Irish whiskey. I think @CaptAmerica would agree. I think both are really smooth.

Yep. Makers Mark is quite good, and Monkey Shoulder is the best blended Scotch I think I’ve ever had.

Actually, any Scotch that doesn’t taste like dirt is good (no Laphroig!).

I just finished off a bottle of Knob Creek, and found it rich and full of flavor.

Bought a bottle of Highland Park 12 a couple of weeks ago. Supposed to be a good intro to peated whisky but (for me), the taste of iodine was overwhelming and turned me off to peated whisky. I guess I'm stickin' to Glenmorangie's (picked up a bottle of Lasanta to try), Glenfiddich's, and Glenlivet's.

The 18 is even better but 4x the cost.

We tried an airplane sized bottle of The Macallan (12 year double cask). It's one of the better single malts we've tried. After my wife and I both had a couple of sips, we tried adding a couple of drops of water in it to see if it "opened up" -- absolutely killed it :( .

Single malt vs. Blended malt, what is the difference and what would be better? Of course it is an opinion, but I'm not up on scotch. Some friends are, and holidays are fast approaching, would like to be prepared.

    Good question.

Single malt has to be as old as the date stamped on the bottle. (And tend to be from the same run)

Blends are usually put together by the master distiller and can have any age whiskey in it. Some old some new etc.

I personally enjoy both. Blends tend to be more flavorful IMO. Single malts “purer” if that makes sense and slightly smoother.

Like asking if the 2nd or 3rd Gen is better ;). You'll start a shitstorm... :crapstorm:

Blended is made (blended) from two or more single malts.

Are you already a scotch drinker? I find many of them repulsive (mainly the Islay since they are SO peated i.e.: taste like dirt.)

If you are new to scotch (like me) I can say that I DO like Auchentoshen. Three Wood and American -something- I can't recall the full name right now, Im drinking Makers Mark... but its a good smooth intro to scotch. as are many highland.

So from a sipping scotch, single blend is better?

I see, it's about ones taste? That creates an issue when trying to decide what to have on hand. Definately not a scotch person, don't think I've ever had a taste of it. Any recommendations on mid-price both?

Some of my favorite scotches are blends. Some are single malt.

You can’t go wrong with a 12-18 year highland single malt.

Some blends come out pretty bad. Like they’re trying to get rid of barrels.

So if it’s a gift I’d either buy a bottle to try first or stick to a single malt (well known distillery)

I loathe scotch. seriously. Husband is serious (Islay!) scotch drinker. I can't stand the smell, much less the taste! i really do call it dirt. Then I got introduced to Auchentoshen. (And other highland -not Islay- scotches - and really started enjoying them. its the peat of Islay that really turns me off. (thats the iodine, tar, fuel comments from others. It really grosses me out!) But highland and others are milder and much less peat-y.

Whoa, that's a little vague, don't get me wrong. Any recommendations when it comes to distilleries and brands? What would be a well known distillery?

So Highlander is one I should look for? Ok, thanks! Maybe it's something that's kind of "middle grade"?

For blended, I found Chivas Regal 12 fairly approachable (and the only blend I've tried) and reasonably priced. Doesn't taste like dirt!
For single malt, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glenmorangie 10 yr are all recommended "starter" whiskies. (Edit - Macallan 12 yr is pretty good too)

The first single-malt I tried was the Glenmorangie. I wasn't used to drinking alcohol straight-up, usually a Crown & Coke for me, so it took a few glasses to get used to the alcohol at full strength.

I’m being a little lazy and most of them have really hard names to spell...
I really like Macallan, Auchentoshan, Oban, the “glens” (posted ^)

Honestly go to a good bar with a wide selection and they’ll stock the most popular scotch whiskeys. This is true almost globally I’d think. And maybe you could try some out too.

There also some really good Japanese whiskeys out there also.
