Looking for that extra touch for a recipe that only requires beer, onions and brats...

Hummm Dutch oven in the fire then finish them off over the fire on a stick to get that smokey flavor. Also toss in a couple cloves of garlic.

Toast some rolls on the flames after brushing with olive oil and garlic power, add a nice mustard and some provolone.

Camping with those ingredients, I'd add a healthy amount of butter, onions, garlic, herbs, and consider adding potatoes and making a stew in a dutch oven as someone mentioned. Saute the onions and garlic in butter before adding the other stuff, to release the natural sugars in the onions and tame the garlic. I'd minimize the beer, because anything you cook with beer tastes predominantly like... beer. And not in a good way. In fact, I'd make a stew without beer and then just drink the beer while I eat the stew. In fact I'd drink beer before, during, and after making the stew.

For a campsite stew, I'd consider a gamey meat like lamb, elk, bison, etc. Brats are just pork, which is actually kind of boring in a stew.

    Just my opinions. YMMV.

Thats what I was thinking...beer of choice, onions and brats...let them simmer for a couple hours then hit them on the grill for a quick sear...

    back to bone stock.
cook over fire and keep them hot in a pan (while your toasting buttered rolls carefully over the same fire) full of simmering beer with onions. fish out the beer-onions to drape over the finished product.

ARE Z-series shell, ImMrYo mirror lift, always on fog-lights.
Could cook them in the crockpot before you go and then toss them on the grill to warm up and get your grill marks while camping. Also have the onions pre-cooked and warm them up as well before you toss them on, or sauté them in some oil at the camp site.

I grill my brats for like 2 minutes on each side and then throw them into a bot of beer, butter, and onions for the remainder of their cooking.

This is it, you got it. Then put 2 brats on a genuine Sheboygan Hard Roll, no hot dog buns allowed. Add catsup, mustard ,pickel and a slice of onion.
I was born and raised in Sheboygan WI. The brat capital of the world. The first real food babies are feed are brats.
