Dealer "No Lifts on 2018"

The dealer I am working with to order a 2018 Tacoma told me that all Toyotas across the board will have TSS and with that lifts will affect the TSS features. He told me that his dealership will not be doing lifts any more, and they do a lot, and his thought was that shops would not be doing them either. So lifting is still of course doable, but it will lose the sensor functions and void warranty. We discussed if aftermarket shops would do it and he cautioned me that some might but it becomes a huge legal/financial liability if an accident were to happen and they were to be potentially found at fault. This is the GM of the dealership and is being helpful not trying to blow me off. Thoughts?

 

Go get a 17 now?

 

Or snag a second gen that doesn't have any of this madness!

The Land Cruiser got some of this TSS junk starting in 2016 and they still do lifts on them AFAIK.

 

What functions are affected by the TSS sensors? Makes you wonder if Toyota is implementing this to try to deter folks from modifying their rides?

 

I tried but they don't have what I want anywhere in the region and cannot allocate it from Toyota (too late in the year- already switched over to 2018 he told me)... That is the one thing that really frustrates me about Toyota is their pushing everyone down the same rabbit hole when wanting to order a vehicle specifically with what I want that matters to me, but cannot b/c it is not in one of their pre-designed setups. I understand profit and economies of scale... but com'on guys give us a little individuality.

I wonder what the tolerance on the TSS-P is. For instance would no lift and a +1 tire add (like a 265/70r17) be ok?

 

You will be fine lifting an 18. That’s just Toyota corporate covering their butt. What does TSS do when you load down the bed and the grill is pointed up? It might be a little less precise but how would that be different from a 17 without it?

Any change in the elevation of the sensor will effect the sensor. The system is expecting to see the ground a fixed distance away on level terrain. That said, lifting the truck won't cause it to spontaneously catch fire or turn into a Chevy, or some other horrible event.
But it may cause unexpected behaviors unless you disable it.
At some point in the next couple of months we will see aftermarket support of some sort with a bypass unit.

 

If it really is a problem, someone will likely come up with some type of recalibration kit for the sensor and charge 100 bucks for it.

 

Calibration for engines and trannys I can see but for accident prevention devices I believe it's another area of risk and responsibility here which is the issue. Who wants that risk for a $100 product ?

Disabling something you've gone your whole life without already doesn't increase your physical risk. Physical risk stays same as where you were before.

Financial risk may be a question though if insurance decides not to cover an incident due to the disabled feature.

 

I can see someone dicking around with this safety shit, being involved in an accident, ambulance chasers get involved, insurance company says sorry, said person spends the rest of their life working for someone else.
