Was looking at the bank account today and noticed about a dozen charges from netflix. Pretty freaked out about it, but also I don't understand it. I thought to use a debit card online you'd need an address that matches the card? So does that mean somebody somehow stole both my debit number AND my personal info? The bank is being pretty good about it and assuring me that all the charges will be canceled but it's still pretty freaky knowing s&*t like this can happen.

You are lucky. Debit cards don't have buyer protections that a credit card has. Your bank is doing you a favor.

    Can't answer your original question.

Yeah, it happens. I've gotten pinched a couple times but, Suntrust takes care of it on my end. It just sucks changing my billing information everywhere.

We have capital 1 360 for what it's worth. They said we don't need to change our account, just a new card. They couldn't really explain how it happened either, which doesn't help my freak-out.

I have had my credit card and debit card numbers hacked.

Had no way to know my address, unless they snagged it online.

Bank n c.f. company made them both goid for me. Didn't lose a dime.
@koditten might want to change banks.

Some do, it just depends on the bank and the financial institution backing the card (visa, mc, etc.).

I've had my debit card skimmed from two different gas stations. Bank covered both. I can give several reasons to use a credit card over a debit card. Other than immediate withdrawal from your account, I can't recommend a debit card for much of anything.

    Credit Cards:
    • (usually) have better theft protection
    • they cover car insurance when you rent a car
    • you get miles/points when you use them
    • you build your credit score
    • They keep your cash liquid until payment time

    There's a lot more, but i'm stopping at 5.

most banks will cover fraud charges. ive only had my cc information stolen which is only used at gas stations so it had to have been skimmed at some point. ive never had an issue getting the fraud charges dropped either without questions.

agree that a cc is useful for most standard spending so long as you are paying it off in full every month to avoid any interest. otherwise youre losing money at that point.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
I stopped using my debit card at Home Depot because it was getting. Flagged annually as "number compromised".

Now I just pay cash or Paypal there.

Had a couple of credit card numbers stolen thanks to GameStop and harbor freight hacks. Love how those retailers get hacked and leave the customers high and dry. Thankfully my credit card were on top of it.

Yeah, I should have called that out more explicitly, but figured it was implied.

Anyway, if you use your credit card the same as your debit card and only spend what is in your bank, you'll be fine. People get in trouble when they use credit cards for daily stuff like starbucks or groceries and use their cash on superfluous stuff...like truck parts. :blahblah:

He's alive.. At one time I was getting a new debit card every year because it was compromised. Might have been all the trips I was making to Home Depot now that you mention it.
