If you threw your flashlight at the back of someone’s head as fast as 60MPH, would it hurt them? Really, stuffy toys would be ok, but definitely not hard things - heck, even coffee mugs are bad news in a collision.

 

ANYTHING can be a flying object in your car during a collision. Drive with an empty truck and a helmet if it makes you feel any better. I am not suggesting, or recommending who/what should be mounted on these racks. That's up to the end user's discretion.

You are right, I used to be an ER Tech myself, bad stuff to have heavy things flying around in a vehicle. So I do like your billet design - I can see a benefit in that it definitely can make it safer when people use it to tie down things using webbing in the holes to secure it instead of normally leaving them out on the seats, like my tripods and heavy stuff like that.

I have some quick fists either in the mail or in a mountain of boxes in the garage. Once I get them I’ll have one of my AR pistols up there plus a med kit.

 

I'm interested if you are building this from aluminum. Based on all the armor I have on my truck already, I'd like to reduce some weight. Just to confirm, does this fit a 2011 Double Cab?

 

That's a great idea. I would be interested as well.

1. Anodizing would be great.
2. You should design it to be able to still use your handles if possible.

 

I am going to be doing a short run of aluminum and steel versions. Just waiting for the laser guy to get back to me on steel pricing.
After that, I will probably be powdercoating them black. Ano'd jumps the price up a bit

 

@mesojdm as soon as you have the prices set for both aluminum and steel, I'll reach out to the folks currently on the list to determine which they want and I'll update the list respectively.

One question: do you know roughly what the weight difference will be between the two?

Aluminum, type III hard anodize. Retain use of handles. Minimize weight, add the folded edges to increase ridgidity, decrease thickness to reduce cost and weight. Rigidity from design, not thickness. Flat will sag unless it’s crazy thick.

That's all legit, except There isn't really a way to retain the handles as they snap in to the roof, and this rack will have to bolt in.
