Hoping to join the ranks soon. Looking to buy a Gen 2 TRD OR 4.0 AC automatic in the next few weeks. Looking for a 07-11 or 13-15 most likely, anything other than red or black. Going to test drive a magnetic gray metallic 2015 on Saturday, certified pre owned with 49K miles. Very excited, have wanted a Taco for many, many years, but always seemed to buy other cars/trucks that were more "sensible". My fiancée finally talked me into getting what I really want instead of the Subaru gas mileage commuter I was going to buy! What's an extra $50 a month in gas to drive what I really want, right? :) Who knows when life will end so live now and enjoy it while you can!

I currently reside in southern Michigan for work reasons. I enjoy the outdoors (camping, fishing, hunting, etc.). Other vehicles include a CJ7, Road King, Suzuki DR650, 14' fishing boat and a canoe. If anyone has any advice for me on purchasing my new Toy, please share!

    Matt

The prices of used 2nd Gens won' be that far off from a new 3rd Gen, ever consider a 2017?

shakerhood - You are right that these trucks hold their value quite well. It seems like the 2015's I have been seeing are about $10K cheaper than the 2017's similarly loaded up (mid 20s vs mid 30s around here for a 4x4 V6 TRD AC). If I go a few years older (10-11) the price drops into the mid teens, but I have to really watch out for rust damage around here on the older ones. As far as miles it seems like the engine/trans run forever if you take care of it so I am not too worried about buying one with 50K or even 100K on the clock. I have a self imposed $25K limit, I'm just not comfortable spending more than that for something that depreciates the way cars do. I can get the OR TRD 4.0 AC with slightly above average miles (~15K/year) for around that price but a nicely optioned new rig around here is pushing $40K. I could probably get into a base model 4x4 for close to my budget but for some reason want the "extras" on this truck. I am thinking this one will stay stock so I want the (marginally) better suspension, seats, locker etc. and just run the stock stuff with some good tires. I don't wheel hard these days, but if I have that urge I will probably take my CJ out. I can tow it with the Taco!
I have read quite a few 300K mile stories about the 4.0, not sure on the 3.5 yet. I was actually really close to buying a Toy a few years ago but I wanted to wait until the new model came out. I like the looks of the gen 3s but one of the biggest reasons I want a Toyota is for the longevity and low maintenance. The gen 2 4.0 and auto trans seems to have proven itself in that respect. I haven't really read a lot about the 3.5 I guess to be honest. Maybe it will prove to be just as great, time will tell.

The way these things hold their value it seems to be if I don't like what I get I can probably sell it for pretty close to what I paid and get a different one. I figure I may need to get a DC in a few years if some young`uns join my clan so maybe then I will get the new model.

That is my rambling and possibly nonsensical reason why I am not looking at a new truck. I could be completely wrong but somehow have convinced myself this is all completely logical! :)

I think a red one would be drop dead gorgeous..... black hood, white cap and machine face wheels has me wanting an upgrade, now. Thanks and welcome to TW!

@FishHunter Welcome to T-dubb. :) If you can get a 2015 for $10k less than a 2017 you'll be more than $10k ahead in my opinion.

I actually love the looks of the red and/or black trucks I see on here, just don't want one for my daily driver. Again, no real logic behind my choice, just want something less noticeable I guess. I would love a gen 2 in the new sand color, would be a custom paint job though and I am too cheap for that!

Consider yourself lucky getting one in good condition at all. Who cares about the color. Good luck in your search!
