Oops! When I was doing my SAS I had a pretty big powersteering fluid leak and I cleaned it up with some rags, I started welding up another area of the truck and thought the weld smoke smelled different. I looked down to an inferno of burning rags, kicked them out of the garage and sprayed then with the garden hose. Lots of black smoke as well, ooopps!! And that's why I'm a safety guy for a profession!

These stories are exactly why I have a camera in my shop that I can look at remotely.

My job requires me to be on call quite a bit. When the call comes in, I have to head out asap.

If I'm working in the shop welding and I get the call I can at least view my shop remotely and call in the FD if needed.

I'm paranoid of fire in the shop.

In not at home now, but I am able to turn on some lights and check out the shop when I like.

The camera also texts me when the motion detector is triggered.20171206_221624.jpg

I should have mentioned, I screen shot that pic just before I posted above.

If you have Wi-Fi available, a $70 camera is a great investment for your piece of mind.

That's a great thing to be paranoid of!! A shop fire brings the suck.

with all that said, I need to make a decision.

Presently, the shop is heated with hot water tubes in the floor. Since I'm not there all the time I keep the heat set at 50*. When I work in the shop I start the wood stove too bring the temp up to a more comfortable level.

I've been thinking more and more about getting rid of the wood stove and installing a hanging unit heater. Natural gas since the boiler uses NG.

Wood heat is free, but it comes with hassles as well as my built in paranoia.

Cost wise, it's pretty close to being a wash.

I'm licenced to do my own install, so install labor's are not counted.

I think I know my own answer, but curious to what others may say.

In addition, my structure is insured for a solid fuel heat source, so we don't need to visit that topic.

Dude that’s Gnarly. That could have been super bad!!!

Thanks man! I really appreciate it. It’s a ton of fun. Just trying to get better all the time. I have Hobart 210 MVP. It does everything I need it to. Thought about getting the Hobart Ironman 230 when/if I need a bigger machine in the future

Whew! Fire is scary sometimes man. Once something catches it can go up quick and you gotta be on your toes and know what to do right away.

    Thanks dude.

I'm a fan of wood heat and my only other options are propane and electric. The house is old and well ventilated so neither of those are viable for an all winter option. I do have a propane furnace as a backup, it runs only turns on a couple of early mornings in Dec & Jan. Also have a wood burner in a separate shop. Have to admit that getting the wood cut & split takes longer than it used to. We don't go out much so mostly home all the time. I always go check the shop at a half hour, 1 hr and 2 hours after I'm done. You have to do what is comfortable for you. No point in stressing yourself unnecessarily.

It depends, I suppose you could go with glycol for the In Floor if your system is compatible. It's less effective for heat transfer but you can crank it down without fear of freeze up. An aux. gas unit would make sense seeing you're already running gas but beware of standing pilots & the unit sooting up with colder than usual start ups. I paint & do interior work as well as burn rods so gas is out since it just destroys foam seat forms over time. Hope you find a solution that works best for you.

Wow you people have fires yet no one mentions smelling anything ??

I pick up on the different smell and look around .

This seldom happens any more in my shop .

Now work is different they start several fires a day none of them ever having real world experience .

The Fire Extinguisher Service Company tells me we are by far his best Customer!!

What fuel Heats the radiant Floor Heat??

Did you ever do the math if you increased that temp to 65 and left it there

The hanging gas heater is just going to be used to boost the heat when your working ??

I like my Wood heat for those times the power is out.

I don`t seem to be paranoid about fires since burning down the house and garage in my youth

I'm also thinking about getting a hanging NG heater for my garage. I have no heat in there now so it would be a great addition. Haven't done much research yet though.

Welding is cool. It's taken me a lot of places and showed me a bunch of stuff I've never seen before. They sent me to weld on some gates on a dam for a couple days. It's wet and nasty but cool nonetheless.

Im pretty paranoid with fire extinguishers lol. I have a pressurized water extinguisher that stays on my cart most of the time. Only time its not is if I have it outside for burning. Then I have a regular CO2 on the wall by the door. Then I keep a couple of those small can sized CO2 guys in my tool cart, rolling table, and the work table. But I also keep an extinguisher in the truck (both a 10lber and same can) and in the car (just the can in that one)

So am I. When I build a new shop Ill be installing a fire sprinkler setup. Really they are pretty cheap and simple.

Are you talking radiant is currently installed? If so it works best if you set it and leave it instead of raising and lowering. It takes a decent amount of time to heat up

I have no sense of smell. Part of why I worry about it a bit more than other people

Took down a stand i made like 10 years ago and made some repairs on the ladder, fixing to go move it to abother tree (that first weld is the best of the original all done in 6011 and it was maybe the 3rd thing i ever made; the rest of the welds are really ugly haha) and then i used a mig on all the repairs that went much smoother and fast that them sticks did 10 years ago (after i realized i was using the cheat sheet for 120v instead of 240... The first weld was super cold but i figured out what i did wrong)

That’s smart to have all those extinguishers. I wouldn’t call that paranoid. I’d call that prepared

Part of it is definitely from my lack of smell though. Bit more paranoid than others im sure. Been a couple times with the plasma cutter that a hot ember will fall to the ground and smolder. I wont notice and the smoke isn't noticeable to me (since no smell) with the hood on. Same with grinding/welding I wont quite realize how smokey the garage gets :)

Ive also filled the kitchen with smoke a few times lol. Don't smell stuff burning when baking

Does have advantages at times...like gear oil is perfectly fine to me :)
