I change mine after letting it sit over night. By then all the oil in the filter has drained back into the pan and there is no mess when you remove it. No cup needed.

Not bad... Driveway is on a slant, so ramps under the front level the truck, and don't want to leave the truck on ramps overnight. With a soda bottle under the drain hole, I crack the filter just loose enough to let in air. By the time the crankcase is drained, so is the filter.

Good stuff OP this was so simple. Finally replaced with Mobil 1 and a fumoto valve to make it easy with skids. Apparently my oil filter drain rubber plug was missing from the last time the stealership did my change under warranty. Never going back to them as they suck. Now to find a stupid little plug somewhere to replace.

My dealership keeps leaving that plug off as well. Replaced I don’t know how many times. Guess I’m going to have to take it off before the change.

I filled it with 5 quarts. Ran it for a bit then checked it. Filled it with half of the 6th checked it. Then poured in the rest of the bottle. Still wasn't on the dipstick

The dipstick is notoriously hard to read with fresh clean oil on it. More than one person has thought there wasn't anything on it when in fact they were already overfilled. Sanding the dipstick makes it easier to read.

The easiest way to read the dip stick is to let to remove it and let it sit outside of the tube for about 10-15min. I change my oil, run the engine a bit, check the stick then rest it on top of the engine cover and sit back for a few to allow the oil in the tube to drain back down. It works like a charm every time. I also always use 5 quarts and its spot on, maybe because I don't drain enough to get that other .5 quart out or the fact I'm on a slight incline in my driveway.

When you go to the dealer and just ask for 5w-30 is that oil conventional or synthetic? I don't recall seeing it on the label.

Dealer probably uses conventional unless you ask for synthetic. I believe conventional is what it calls for on second gens.

I recently just started buying the big jug of 5w-30 conventional Valvoline or whatever is on sale from AutoZone instead of the individual quarts from the dealer. Thanks for the reply.

this is what I do as well, then just snag a 1 qt here and there on sale.

I was changing every 5000 with conventional at dealer which was recommended and when my light came on in my 2014 but I hate the stealer ship and its much easier and less hassle at home with synthetic. currently only dribing 12-15000 miles per year so I only have to change oil 2 x maybe 3.

This last oil change I put in 5.5 quarts and I was a hair over the full line on the dipstick. Next time I'm going to try just putting 5 quarts in and seeing how it looks. Sure would be easier to just use full bottles as well.
