Should I buy a used 2012-2015, or a new 2017/2018?

so long story short is I have found a pretty good deal on a 2013 TRD Sport Access 4x4 with 28k Miles. Dealer wants $23k after negotiating from $25k. Figured this was a good deal but when you’re only $10k away from a brand new vehicle with a warranty does it make more sense to go new?

What are you guys paying for your 2017/2018 Tacoma’s brand new?

    Would you guys buy a 2012-2015 over a 2016+?

If you could do it all over again would you have bought a double cab over an Access Cab or vice versa?

I am having the worst time deciding between the 13 and a ‘17/‘18 and if I need a double cab or an Access Cab

    Primarily using the Tacoma for

    1. Modify with exterior mods to “look pretty”
    2. Going to be a mall crawler, only off road it’ll see will be the beach
    3. Throw dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, kayaks, fishing and hunting gear in the bed

    I know I want:

    1. TRD Sport
    2. 4x4
    3. Either Spruce Mica, Pyrite Mica, Blue ribbon metallic or Barcelona Red for a 2nd gen
    4. Either quicksand, cement or white in 3rd gen

Any help is appreciated, wanting to pull the trigger in the next 2 weeks

    What’s your guys experience/ suggestions?

I was in the same boat roughly. If I could re do it I would go with the 13.

The '13 will still have the 4.0 and with only 28k you are still covered under some warranty. Power train should be 60k.

I would not buy any of the 3rd Gen models. Over priced ugly truck with reliability issues.

    Go 2nd Gen for sure!!

    Yup, would buy a '12-15 over a 16+.

    Nope. I <3 my AC.

Drive both AC and DC, in both '12-15 and 16+. Go with what works best for you.

The truck doesn’t have a great ride, paint sucks, tons of little rattles and vibrations inside and out. Some rattles I’m sure I could resolve easily but I don’t think any brand new vehicle should have them after 10,000 miles. The finish of the interior sucks. Minor seat wear and door card wear. Drivers door window motor is failing, cab mounts knock/rattle. It’s my first brand new vehicle so I’ve been easy on it and tried my best to have everything fixed as it came up. But the dealer constantly says “that’s normal” or “we couldn’t replicate” the gas mileage is hardly better and the shift points are awful. When you the truck is cold it has weird transmission characteristics.

Drive both for sure but I will probably be trading this truck in next year sometime.

For throwing bikes in the back, either an AC or DCLB seem to be the best bet. If you personal preference is for either, I'd say save the money and get used. I've got a Barcelona Red DCSB, I like the color and the truck. If I didn't have my son to haul around, I would've got an AC instead.

Damn thats insane to hear that, I am really indifferent on the looks between the 2.5 gen and 3rd, but I think this seals the deal as far as where my money should go

I'm truly interested in which becomes a "MY GEN IS BETTER CUZ IT IS" battle sooner.

I already let a buddy borrow the tacoma for a week because he was going to buy one. When I got my truck back he had bought a Colorado.

Think hard about how many people will be riding with you, if more than 1 adult passenger you probably want a double cab. If your not sure you may want to get a double cab anyway. I got a 16 AC and regretted it and ended up trading in for a 17 DC. Also consider what size bed you want for what you plan to haul. Personally I like the 3rd gens, no issues with either one so far. I'd check out both and see which you think you like better. I never owned a 2nd gen but did drive one the company I work for owned, believe it was 2012, nice truck but I like the 3rd gen better.

I initially thought that the OP only posted in the 2nd gen forum because he already made up his mind and was looking for some reassurance before pulling the trigger. But now I see that he's looking to stoke the flames on this perennial debate in order to make up his mind. :stirthepot:

My vote: go with the '13. You get a solid truck at a good price and keep a great deal of coin in your pocket. BUT if you're the type that solely looks for a feature laden interior in a truck, go with the 3rd gen.
