What is the rubber “cover” that is around the lower ball joint and do I need it? One of mine is old and split. Well both are old...

Yes. You need it. If the ball joint is still good, a (poly)urethane cover could be fitted, but it might be better just to replace the ball joint.

I am replacing the ball joints. They didn’t come with new covers. What do they do and where can I get new ones? I haven’t been able to find a part number.

Not the rubber that’s on the ball joint. The rubber that wraps around the ball joint. Like a little buffer.

They were a part that were added around 2001 to the ball joint assembly - you can buy new ball joints from Toyota that either have it or don't . The main difference is the hardware is a little shorter for those that don't come with it afaik.

    So it’s not necessary?

Good deal. Glad I don’t need to hunt some down. Thanks.
