So i had money in my bank to pay some bills. I put the check in the mail for my taxes that i owed, but i put the date of 4-15-2010 on it cuz i thought they had to wait till that day to pull it out. ( apparently not) So they cash the check on the tenth and i didnt know about it, so im still paying my other bills with the money i had in the bank.

Well they hit my with 6 overdraft fees and a returned item fee. So my bank was -250 bucks. So i call a rep today and tell him the situation nicely, and see if they can do anything about the fees. He says no, i ask why not, then he puts his supervisor on. I ask him and he says no. So now im starting to get mad. Anyways, he wont give me any of the money back.

I know $250 doesnt seem like alot to some people, but to me thats alot. I have way too much debt to be paying a bank my money. Im just really frustrated and dont want to have to resort to sell all the stuff on my truck.

    Thanks for reading.

I wouldn't hate the bank man...Backdating checks only works when both halves understand the deal. If you weren't going to have the $$ for it....Don't write the check for it.

For them to credit the overdraft fees, your account has to be current. I just had this issue last week, and many times before. Just be really nice about it and make them feel some sympathy for ya... It always works for me! Oh, I am with Bank of America BTW.

    Agreed.

Bank didn't do anything wrong. Thats why I always leave a cushion of money in my checking account and I only pay the bill if the money has CLEARED the bank and I can see it sitting in my account.

ya i know i guess i shouldnt have written the check yet, but the reason i wrote it for the 15th is cuz i got paid 12 midnight nad thought thats when it would come out. Thats also when the taxes were due, and i didnt want to get in trouble for being late on that:eek:

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a post dated check. Please remember that you can catch more flies with honey. I would call another location to see if they can work with you on a couple of fees.

You hate banks because...you violated the terms of your checking account that you were provided when you signed up and they penalized you as they stated they would?

As Brunes stated, don't write the check without the funds on hand.

Booya. I know my 'bank' (read: credit union) won't deposit a cheque before the date written on it. They'll hold onto it for you till that date and then deposit it, but they won't process it at all.

Wonder if it's a Canadian thing...

    Anyway...fuck banks.

Sucky way to learn how banks work. I feel for ya, I'd be sweating if I had to pay $250 in fees.

should have waited until the 15th to mail the tax check.

and you shouldn't write a check that your account can't cover

that said, fuck banks. credit union for the win.

I hate Bank of America in particular. They intentionally re-arranged my account over a 3 day period to go into overdraw and charge around $150 in overdraft fees. Three times. I don't know why I didn't learn my lesson the first two times. They've also hidden fees on my credit cards for things that should never have been charged and are not on the fee schedule, as well as other random fees would pop up with no notice of policy changes as well. I finally ditched their ass and went to USAA... never looked back.

Could I have managed better to keep more money in my account to not get that low in the first place? Yes of course... but I shouldn't have to if I know exactly what's getting withdrawn and when I'm putting in. I should have easily had a buffer of over $200 in all cases in the account at minimum.
