Front Passenger Wheel Bearing Needs replacing

I began hearing a metallic click/grind coming from the passenger front wheel. Checked rotors and backing plate, everything looked normal. I broke down and took it into the dealers yesterday. It took them until this morning to figure out that I have a bad bearing. Yep, 24 hours to diagnose...that doesn't give me much confidence in their abilities... Anyway, I'm sure someone in this community has replaced bearings before. I've poked around and have found some good threads about this issue. I'm just wondering if this is something I could tackle on my own. Dealership wants $580! Any advice?

Do you have the right tools todo it should do it on your own but I would take it to the dealer cuz if something goes wrong you know who to blame

 

Thanks! Sounds like you had a heck of a time getting that bearing out/in. I'm looking at the FSM and there's a ton of SST's required(?) to get to that bearing. When you tore yours down, did you have the SST's required or was it accessible with a little ingenuity?

If I'll need/wish I had the SST's, do you have any recommendations on where to purchase/rent them?

No, I don't. I don't have much of a shop and am very limited in my tools. I've found everything I need here: http://toyota.spx.com but don't want to spend a fortune on tools. Do places rent these SST's out?

 

So, I've tried googling "SST" and google came up with a bunch of random definitions. I don't get it. What are you referring to?

ah yeah that would make sense wouldn't it...lol. haven't seen the acronym before on the site, and I've never had to look at the FSM.

In response to your question egoettl, we didn't need any special tools. We got by with tools that you would find in any normal shop. We didn't need to get any special tools from Toyota.

 

Autozone use to press bearings in, not sure if they still do, it's been awhile.

 

Thanks everyone. I brought it to my mechanic to replace yesterday. Just as I rounded the corner to his street, my ABS kicked in! I was going ~15 mph. Sounds like it ate my ABS sensor like silverback07 said it would! There goes more $! I should have just bit the bullet and cracked that puppy open myself! I'll know better next time. Lessons learned:
- If it is already broke, don't be afraid to fix it.
- He who hesitates, loses!
- There's a lot of nice people on this forum!
