Why do toyota's powertrains suck?

I just wrote a check for a 2018 4-Runner and could not be happier - They come in many levels. Only thing they lack is the Toyota Safety Sense gizmos...Understand those will come next year with some re-design.

Coming from an LS2 powered vehicle which weighed less than this thing does and the fact that it had major power in the low RPM band (along with a slew of other power adding mods) I was a little shocked when I found myself constantly having to lead foot the bastard everywhere I went just to get some speed. It was a little bit of a slap in the face for a $33,000 truck. I had to rev the balls out of this thing all the time. Going up inclines was always fun as well.

After sinking in another 5K into it for making the supercharger setup solid and perform as it should out of the box, only now am I truly happy with it and low end power it finally has to get me moving where and when I need to. No longer do I need to redline it just because.

If you can wait, do it.
As you mentioned, the new Ranger is coming, Chevy is upping their game and Toyota has acknowledged all this and is preparing to respond.
I LOVE Toyota and I do love my truck but I'm honestly getting a little tired of my stupid shifting, low power, noisy cab Tacoma. I thought I could live with it but as the months have gone by, it's starting to grind on me more and more.
I'm not bashing the Tacoma here, just my opinion/experience. There's lots of great things about the Tacoma, too.
It's hard to wait and you probably won't have everything on the table to choose from (Ranger, updated Tacoma and Colorado) until fall of 2019 at the earliest, just a guess.
    Good luck!

All Pro-4x Frontiers have a rear locker and 32" ATs. They might be dated but you still get a fully loaded truck with a powerful 4.0L.

Why are you considering buying something you don't like? That's the big mystery here.

I traded my 2007 Tacoma in for my '16 after 140,000 miles. I'm not sure my pedal has ever kissed the floor in my 2016 after 22,000 miles.

    Enjoy that Ford. Been there.

I drive fairly heavy footed to keep the motor awake (manual trans) and I average about 18.5 mpg.

I’ve been averaging 15-16 at best, after I filled up and drove to work the other day which is about 45 miles, slightly uphill I averaged 12. That’s Chevy big block fuel mileage out of my turd gen. Had it at the dealership and they say everything is as it should be

I use the computer, but I’ve hand calculated against it a couple times to check it’s accuracy and it’s close. I put 25$ in it before I left for work at 2.40 something a gallon and I drove it around 170 miles and had to put more in, and that was almost all interstate. Because of the gradual incline on the way to work I get quite a bit less mpg then on the way home. I went up literally one tire size which means it pulls 35-3600 rpm most of the trip to work because it can’t pull tiny hills in 5th lol.

I just calculate the old way at fill up, divide the miles driven by the gallons to fill the tank then theres no guessing or second guessing it is what it is. I got the tiny OEM Duncraps aired to 35psi mines a DD so im paying close attention to mpgs and maintainence, either way I wanted a truck so I have to realize its not going to be a gas mizer.

I can totally relate to your concern. I came from a 2nd gen M/T 4.0 (XRunner) and stepping on the gas of the 3rd gen 3.5 A/T made me go "WTF". That said, after being in it a year I am very pleased with my purchase. Although even now I'm occasionally irritated when I step on the gas for passing / merging due to how long it takes to get power. The power is there if you ask for it, but as many have already said, the auto trans really gets in the way. Consider a M/T 3rd gen if you can find one.

I also briefly test drove the Colorado ZR2 (gas) when my truck was totaled in Hurricane Harvey. I was discouraged because I couldn't find another Pro to replace mine so I was venturing out and looking possible alternatives. The dealership I went to have FOUR ZR2's sitting one one lot. That alone should tell you something. Honestly though, the Colorado drives quite nicely. Personally I think the interior is ugly as balls, but that's all subjective. In reality they are probably decent trucks - just be sure to sell it before you hit 100k.

I think you will see 2nd Gens on the road for many years to come, I still see plenty of 1st Gens on the road too.

Thank god for that. And you are correct, Geely owns them now. I was just noting that when Ford bought them in 99, that's when they split from the heavy equipment side.

I think you took "good bye" out of context.
A 1995 1st gen will get you $1000 - excellent condition, 100K miles. Dated looks and tech included. Maybe. Kbb.
    I consider that gone.
