this topic took another posting off track and I wanted to get it going on a dedicated thread.
Basically the argument was should a driver be going the speed limit in the fast lane(furthest left lane not the carpool) on freeway/interstate.
Especially when other drivers are passing you on the right.

In state of Texas it’s illegal and they will pull you over if you hangout in left lane of the major interstates

It’s legally considered impeding traffic in CA.

Lots of New England highways have signs that say "Keep Right Unless Passing". I've heard of people being stopped in MA for driving in the left lane even on smaller 55 MPH divided highways.

I once heard Highway Patrol say just go with the speed of traffic. I think if the majority is doing 70-75 and that isn't fast enough for you then by all means pass and move on. If you can't or won't keep up with the flow of traffic then you need to move into the middle or if two lane then the slower lane.

it's against the law here in va but nobody pays attention to it and I don't think anybody really gets pulled over. Except............my daughter several years ago did a VSP officer. No ticket was issued.

Unless you are in Texas where speed limit on a lot of highways is 75mph and on others 85mph :D

No, it is not legal and it's dangerous, if you are running 75 in a 70 in the left lane in my area you will get run off the road, my local Sherriffs office will pull you over in a heartbeat for impeding traffic, and if they feel like it they will also write you for Careless or reckless depending on severity (I.E. if you are below the posted limit in the left lane when it is safe to drive the speed limit, and you are not passing).

    Keep right except to pass.

Even on two lane highways, that is the law in NJ.

One of my biggest annoyances, especially the people who camp out in the middle lane marching to their own drummer while vehicles pass on the right and left.

I had the chance to drive the Autobahn, and German drivers are fanatical about adhering to this rule.

I was driving between Duesseldorf and Frankfurt on Christmas Eve, 4:30 AM, frozen rain and heavy fog on a 5 lane highway, in the second to right lane and nobody else on the road. I could see headlights in the distance coming up. That driver pulled up behind me and flashed high beams for me to move over to the slow lane, lol.

Yeah, I always drive in the right lane, and pass left, unless I see emergency vehicles on the right shoulder, then I slow down and move to the left lane- like those guys don't have enough to worry about, getting clipped by a distracted driver.

It's illegal in Florida now too, but it isn't enforced unfortunately, I got into an "accident" because I tried to pass this nuck fard doing 55 in the far left on I95, people were honking at me because they couldn't see this dingus infront of me, couldn't get over because so many people were passing me on the right, tried waiting, flashing lights off then on off then on, flashed brights, flashed light bar, left light bar on and laid into the horn dick wad wouldn't move, finally had an opportunity to pass, gunned it and as I was coming back over Mr. Self Entitled sped up and tagged my rear wheel.

We pull over, turns out the Florida plate in front of me was a tourist, said he was doing the speed limit, bullshit, I had him on my speedo, my GPS, and my torque app all clocked at 55, speed limit is 70, rental car agencys here actually clock the speedo down to keep tourists at slower safer speeds, also if you don't know the average flow of traffic on I95 is 85mph. I mean 18 wheelers were blowing the doors off this ass hat.

To make matters worse, he's an out of state State Trooper, now I have the utmost respect for law enforcement, my brothers a cop, my best friend was a cop, my uncle was a trooper, and my G-paw was Fish and wildlife LEO, but this guy knew EXACTLY what he was doing. So law enforcement shows up, Florida state troopers, great, they do their little trooper secret hand shake, and the accident gets pinned on me because troopers screw the little guy, I mean, because I was the one overtaking and nobody stopped to witness that he steered into me.

    Bull

    FUCKING

    Shit

    TLDR:

Tried to pass a slow moving idiot determined to own the left lane got pit maneuvered, became my only at fault accident ever. Could have been avoided it he GOT OUT OF THE DAMN LEFT LANE.

Now, generally I'm a 55mph right lane warrior getting that 20mpg on my armoured 33'd Taco, but that day I was on a time constraint.

    Sorry RANT over...

I wish the U.S. would adopt the autobahn law of using your left indicator to signal desire to overtake. And more strickt driver training and harder driver exams.

It's challenging to get your DL in Japan, but everyone is recognized as a professional driver by the time they do. The way it should be in my honest opinion. Also you have to be 18 to get your license over there, another idea that's not such a bad idea.

Everybody will be in autonomous vehicles soon enough, and all these matters will be irrelevant, imo.
