You are locked in for the price that you initially bought it for not when the transaction actually goes through

based on the current price. if you have 10 bitcoins and bitcoin cost 10,000 then you can buy something worth 100,000. If the price of bitcoin goes up to 20,000 then you can buy something worth 200,000

Just as an fyi I requested to sell some holdings for the first time on coinbase today. The funds are estimated to be in my bank on 12/14.

True, but it i were to use coin like cash eventually the wallet gets empty and would need additional funding. Now I need to buy at an inflationary level using up more than I made on the original coins. Certainly seems to rule out the universal cash advantage. Besides my cash card works wherever I buy from.

I don't follow you...I wanted to cash out. What would selling them to my wallet do?

I thought alt coin was being touted as a universal replacement for cash, ie a world wide bank card able to be swiped anywhere. Other than that this seems like a pyramid scheme.

It won't make a really viable currency until the volatility settles down.
Right now, purchasing it could be a good investment assuming the price continues to go up.
Think of it like canadian dollars to US dollars. If that ratio fluctuated as greatly as bitcoin currently does, it would be impossible to conduct exchange transactions. The price of what you're buying could change drastically in the time it took you to negotiate and complete the transaction.
All the world's fiat currencies fluctuate relative to each other but at a much slower rate and a much smaller delta.

I think I read somewhere that STEAM was accepting bitcoin and had to stop due to current volatility.

The volatility makes it exciting to speculate and trade. Future stability (if it happens) will make it a viable currency.

LTC is up by almost double. I'm wondering if I sell, then buy again when it drops...

    Not Enough.

Just hold on. If anything, buy more with new money. Personally, I'm thinking I'm about to dump a little other stuff to get more LTC.

I'm thinking I dump when it hits $250. Let it drop back down to $150...

I have to wait for bank verification now because I used CC first time too. Damn my luck.
