^It's true! The 3rd gen hood is noticeably heavier than the 2nd gen hood. Maybe Toyota engineers were trying to address flutter complaints on 2nd gens.

I guess it's down to supply and demand. To this day I think there are only 2 options for 2005-2011 hoods and 1 option for 2012-2015 hoods. The panel is fairly large, so the mold required to form the fiberglass or carbon fiber hood is extremely expensive.
It's a substandard repair. You should be able to get Toyota to work it out with the dealer.

BTW it's very common for dealerships to contract body shop work to a 3rd party. Not that a "1st party" shop is necessarily any better - the work is often very dependent on the skill of the technician.

2 options for the 16-17s, the standard floppy hood, or the scooped fantastic one.

Picked up my truck today, what do you guys think? Wondering if the gap difference is as big a deal as I think it may be?....Is there any way to adjust these hoods without causing damage?

I'm going to be calling corporate this weekend, just bullshit that I had to go through this crappy process on a brand new 3k mile truck.

Basically sums up what happened to me:

-Reported adhesive issue to Toyota during first service
-local Toyota contracted small body shop
-small body shop wanted to replace my hood, I declined and asked for new adhesive
-small body shop applied incorrect adhesive, which caused a dimple dent in the hood. should have taken photos....
-truck was then given to different larger body shop to paint and install new hood with 2017 adhesive correction

    Yeah, that's not ok.

Is Toyota even running a shim on the gaps to make sure they meet spec?

Spoke with the body shop that installed the hood, they stated that a hood alignment should be an easy fix? Is it that simple? Spoke with corporate Toyota and made a claim about the bs I had to deal with.

Funny that you mention the hood on the OR. I recently picked up my truck and was able to give it a good bath yesterday. As I was wiping it down, I noticed how weak/flexible the hood is. Yeah, I can imagine this hood having issues. Screw this, I'll be looking for a Sport hood with the non working scoop.

So, should I have the body shop try to align my hood? Can it actually be aligned without bending anything?

Thinking I want a new hood.

This isnt a big deal at all, it happened to me when installing ditch light brackets. Just unbolt the 4 bolts holding the hoods up slightly and shift it to your desired position and then tighten them back up. There is like a 1/4" of play in the bolts and hood-holding brackets so you can easily slide and fix this.

Good to know, wasn't sure if there was any play with the bolts and bracket.

$6 fix and no dealer hassle, no paint mismatch to worry about, no fit/alignment issues. Keep your factory fit and painted hood. The dealer paint shop rarely matches the factory paint job. I've seen this thread for over a year and never checked my '16 TRDOR hood after 29K mi. Sure enough, all the adhesive spots were popped lose. The hood skin can't "fly off" as some fear as it's wrapped and welded at the edges. Run by your fav hardware store and grab a tube of HD Silicone adhesive. It's good for over 1K° and far below 0°. I used a plastic shim to open the gap at each factory adhesive location plus a few more. Remove the shim and wipe away the excess that squirts out. Let dry for a day and you're good to go. I do remember seeing the center of the hood wobbling at fwy speeds, but no more.

Did you remove the defective adhesive or just put new stuff over it?

I just added silicone to the existing glue joints and added more of my own spots ( as shown in the 3rd pic ). The factory glue just let go of the painted surface on one side or the other. The silicone won't let go. Its been on there 4K mi. now and still a perfect bond.

Isn't it kinda sad that we need to run to the hardware store for some glue to glue our $35k trucks back together? And don't get me started on the dash noise when cold or the surge when cold.
