I guess there's something to be learned by taking the long way around sometimes... I've seen heads come up on CL w/ 100k for $100 per since then :)

Still waiting to get around to tearing down the heads. Probably this summer.

Ha. Currently tearing down the second 3vze engine on my girl friend four runner, at least you don't have a time limit with school and work. The more you get into this, the more interested I am. Ive got a lot of deferred maintenance coming up on my 5vze daily driver, mostly in the chasis, I almost want to put an electric engine in my tacoma. Actually I might make a thread about that.

Yes. Time constraints put the pressure on for sure. I am lucky to not have to rush through either this rebuild or my engine swap for my first gen that's 6 months in the making lol. I've learned a lot and I've been watching a lot of diagnostic videos from South Main Auto on YouTube lately. I find this stuff fascinating, but when a person's daily driver is concerned I know it's never really enjoyable.

I guess those 3.0's like the taste of head gaskets?

There's a guy up in Newfoundland and the climate up there as well as the road salt takes a toll on a chassis up there. I'm guessing it's probably not too different in Alaska. Shoot, even my dad's 08 Tundra looks like it spent a couple years underwater in the ocean back in Maine.

The rust is insane, I've had my truck for two years originally form Louisiana, and its already showing signs of the stupid infamous tacoma frame rust BS. What can I do?

Yes the 3vze head gasket failed and the spark plug metal piece broke off, messing up cylinder and piston 6, calling for a rebuild or junk yard replacement, going through now and replacing all important gaskets of the 600$ junk yard replacement. Your rebuild is interesting because I believe the 5vze to be a superior engine and maybe I have to do that to mine sometime :bananadance:. So get'er done! Id rather replace her with an electric engine drive. Some interesting youtube videos dedicated to this. Thanks Tesla.
