My Bose Aviation X headset is squealing unbearably loud when descending to pattern altitude. Turning off the ANR gets rid of the squealing, but turning it on again brings it back within a minute or so. It squeals so loud I'm afraid it will damage my ears and I have to rush to get the headset off my head while I find the button to turn off the ANR. I got these second hand and am not pleased. Anyone have any ideas? The small microphones on the outside of the ear cups look to be clear of any blockages and the ear pads look to be in good condition. I put in fresh batteries also. Should I talk to Bose or try to get my money back? I'm not sure how much Bose would charge for a refurb.

Is it an aircraft you normally fly? Is the headset setup for mono or stero? Was it some how switched? Since it is a handme down what impedance is the headset and mic(high or low)??

@MatthewMay1, Only during descents? Could be a resonance issue. Creating some kind of noise frequency that the noise cancelling isn’t able to rectify. Try varying your RPM and/or approach descent speed and see if that makes any difference, if you haven’t tried that already. I tried a Bose A20 for about a month. Besides finding it horribly uncomfortable for my head shape after a couple hours, it would squeal if I leaned toward the heated windows. Do you have window heat in your machine?

Nice! Did my MIFR in a Seminole back in ‘97. Seeing that picture takes me right back. It’s been a helluva ride! Good luck in your future. Don’t forget to take the time to enjoy the journey.

Definitely! I've got a long road ahead of me with my low time, but I enjoy every little bit of it!

Yes, same airplane I always fly. I have already messed with the mono/stereo setting because at first it was only playing in one ear. Not sure what you mean by impedance of the mic.

Yeah, only during descents nearing pattern altitude. I have a controllable prop so the RPM remains the same during cruise and descent until final approach. It seems like if I go down at less than 400ft/min there is no squeal, but changing the way I fly to fix my headset is not what I want to do. I do not have heated windows.
Nice! I need to get that knocked out....

Ah the impedance is usually only an issue military headsets. For my dc h1076xl i had to swap the mic out for it to work in GA aircraft. I went from the low impedance mic to a high impedance mic. It wouldnt be an impedance issue if you have been using the same headset this whole time.

Yeah, I’m not suggesting changing the way you fly to make your headset preform as designed. Just saying to try varying speed and RPM as a means of trouble shooting to have some detailed info if you’re decide to approach Bose with your problem...which you should. I always try to provide as much detail as possible to help techs narrow down a problem area. Could save them some time, and you some green.

Gotcha. I think I'm going to remove the ear seals and reinstall them just in case they were not put on correctly. Then I'll go fly and do a lot of troubleshooting. If it becomes too much of a hassle, I'll just ask if the seller will take them back and refund me. I can get a new pair of ANR's when I'm getting paid to fly.

How many here own their own GA aircraft? What make/model? What are your likes/dislikes? What are your thoughts on maintance costs for your specific aircraft?
