Does anyone have experience with this type of ARE Utility Camper top? Would it be very loud on trails and dirt roads? I like the utility but not if it is noisy of road.

I didnt find it too loud. I ran this style cap for a few months. I don’t really go fast off road, but i didn’t notice any extra noises

Last county I worked for had the type with double doors on the back of two light rescue/supervisor trucks. As they got older they rattled more and had several of the frame welds crack. Admitedly they weren't well maintained i.e. latches periodically adjusted and visual inspections, they had different drivers and the doors got slammed, etc., but overall they worked well enough.

If you get one, before you take delivery, climb inside it and make sure all of the welds looks good. Several of the welds that came lose on the ones I mentioned were obviously not good penetrating welds and should have been caught on inspection at the factory. I generally like ARE but it seems all of the shell manufactures have QC issues at times, like they go through new hires or something.

Prior to my Tacoma I had a Chevy Silverado with a similar cap. I used the cap for both gear security and camping shelter for about 3 years.

Rattles from doors are addressed by adjusting the stops/latch and/or adding gasketing material.

The interior was bare panel aluminum...learned quick that insulation was required for both sound and temperature control (in warm or cold climate conditions). I used spray adhesive with Refletex insulation (silver mylar coated bubblewrap). I saw other projects where guys used self adhesive foam backed industrial carpet squares...I chose not to do this approach only due to the weight involved/added to the cap. The carpet did look very nice!

For camping IN the cap you likely will find you need both insulation and a powered fan vent if it's over say 75F.
