haha Well next year goal is ProRock 60 front/rear and 40's...So a little more for the similarity. With the steering so crappy I was in no hurry to Lock the front. I'm a civilian DOD Contractor, I've been supporting the Air force for the last 10 years.:oldglory:

That's good man. I just came back from deployment a few months ago (army). DoD civilian contractors work very hard overseas. So thanks for what you do to support our troops

Because of deployment I am now finally slowly catching up with the final details of the project before. It has been a slow process but am getting there.

If you really wanna go the 1 ton axle route, you can build a pair of used axles (d60/14bolt, or 2005+ super duty d60 with rear matching sterling, etc.) for the price of one of those ProRock axles

Now, for the fully custom route, instead of ProRock I would personally shoot for a pair of "609" axles. There's a SAS build on this forum of a guy from the Bay area I believe that has those axles. Super crazy bad ass stuff.

You usually go with a custom housing (ruff stuff or Diamond), Ford 9" differential (one of the strongest drop out diffs you can get) with D60 or equivalent 1 ton outer parts (inner C's, knuckles, hubs, spindles, brakes, etc.). At that level guys usually go with RCV axles shafts too. It is really the best of both worlds. A 609 is not necessarily cheaper than ProRocks but more customizable, which I think gives you a better value for your $$$.

Thanks man, and Thank you for your service. Ok shit man Good stuff^^^ I like the saving $$$ aspect and I diffidently need to research more, 9.5 or 10.5 axle etc. I want matching front rear and have them be the last axle I'll buy lol. My Diamond has all the goodies, RCV shafts etc and is perfect for 37" but I would like to be a little wider front/rear running 40's/lockers with no stress. I'll probably pick your brain some more when it gets closer.

wider is cool (more stability and easier to fit things) but it can get you in trouble with the law depending on where you live.

You should be able to get good money out of that diamond axle if you ever decide to sell it.

Ford 9 inch is super strong. Read about it online when you get a chance. Used in nascar race cars for years. Really cool stuff.

I diffidently have some Google time coming, I'm hoping to see some 2nd Gen SAS rigs at KOH 2018. Always better seeing it in person, we have some local 1st gens running 9'...They look perfect, not sure on the fat ass 2nd gen tho. The plan is to line the axles up with rear links! Just need to hide more $$$ from the wife:anonymous: Selling my front/rear axles will help for sure and I'm sure they will sell fast...

Why not keep your front setup and do a 9 in rear? I'm sure if you don't get crazy stupid with the skinny pedal the front will hold up. Plenty of people running that combo.

And I'm sure a 9 in will hold up since the ultra 4 rigs run them and beat on them super hard.

That's still an option for sure. If I did keep the front and go to a 9" in the rear Id do the Currie Tacoma F9 9". It features custom housing ends that accept the stock Tacoma axle bearings and allow for all factory ABS and ESP sensors to bolt back on. The idea of a working speedo would be nice for a DD...I'm no heavy foot, just really want to be a little wider and have the option to run 40's! I've been told 37" is max for the Diamond? Still plenty of time to iron out the details and need to weigh all pro's/con's

A lot of guys seem to run 40s on toyota axles with good success. But it's your money and I like bling axles haha. How much wider do you want? Your only 2 inches shy of full width right now?

I plan to do a 9 in rear as well. Probably a Currie semi float with 31 spline axles, explorer brakes and an arb. I'm not racing or see myself going to 40s so that will be more than strong enough for me.

Honestly Id be happy with a 2-3 inches wider and the option to run 40's. Now if I can run 40's with the Diamond front and 9" rear and have no worries..That sounds waaaay cheaper and more practical. I went from knowing nothing about the SAS Tacoma life to building one. I'm diffidently still a newbie and going to think this one through 100% I will look into the Currie semi float also, thanks for sharing that. I try and keep up with you guys in the SAS Forum but sometimes it's in a different language..haha

There are so many variables. It is overwhelming! I think we are all learning about this stuff everyday. Sometimes I don't know the language people use on the SAS forum either lol!

Maybe Wyatt from rocksolidtoys and his crew will show up to KOH. Those guys have some incredible 2nd gen SAS tacomas.

In terms of running 40"s with a diamond axle; if you have toyota mini parts I think the biggest concern would be the 8" differential. I guess it all depends on how hard you push things though.

At the end of the day it is all about learning how to have fun with what you have man. Otherwise you will keep upgrading and changing stuff to no end!

Aint that the truth! Sometimes I get caught up in wanting the biggest and baddest thing I forget that what I have now works fine for most of my needs, and I can always upgrade later on down the road.

This. Have always said it and used to think the same thing but once I actually got out and see what other people run and how much harder they ate on stuff I realized what I have is more than strong enough.

And I've been told a 8 in high pinion is equivalent to a stock 60. Just what I've been told and see lots of buggies and truggys running around on toyota axles.

So true man, the Axle upgrade was a bucket list item for next year. When I was thinking/wanting to go bigger I told my self "Wheel it for a year first". I have plenty of time and miles to go before I pull the trigger.

100%...I just need to stop looking at other rigs:D

Agree man, seat time for me this next year will determine a lot. I'm not a heavy foot and it's my DD so I might be overthinking this a little haha. I like the idea of changing out the rear axle for same width as front, also I can go away with the Factory E-Locker and run ARB.

Axles, tire size, suspension type, etc., these things are somewhat subjective and a matter of personal preference. Nobody can really say one thing is better than the other because everybody has different needs based on how they use their vehicles.

Hydro assist or full hydro for big tires and lower gears at the transfer case, for example, are a necessity. Those things have nothing to do with trying to keep up with trends.

However, there is nothing wrong for people to keep evolving with their projects. It's a hobby after all and part of the fun is trying different things from time to time...even if you don't really need them :D

I agree man, I dig how almost every SAS build is different. That's what really pushed me away from just doing another LT Tacoma build(No offense LT guys) It's diffidently a hobby,as a kid I always tear apart shit and changed it...Now 43 years later it's the same just more expensive.:D My only dislike is my rear not keeping up with the front, other then that very please with how she works. Next year that will be fixed, and should have the rear/front axle figured out.
I have never been in a rig with twin sticks...But that might be a good thing as it would be added to the list I think. haha

Always a dilemma, I was gathering parts for a 8"hp diamond build then broke a ring and pinion and grenaded the carrier on my stock e lock 8, granted the hp is stronger with reverse cut gears but it made me decide to change build paths on my front axle. I now have a diamond front at 67wms with fj80 outers and hellfire knuckles and a 9.5 center which still leaves me with 30 spline shafts but beefier birfs. If you want to stay Toyota the 9.5 is a good bet which is just shy of a 60 ring gear, and you can do the 9.5 out of a 100 series rear with 32 spline shafts but your limited to 4:88 gears as your lowest option. The 10.5 is insane strong with 36 spline and has a middle pinion but also limited to 4:88. Now that I found my weak link(I really don't wheel hard either, 35s and a sc'd 3.4 though) I unfortunately find myself in the market for a rear axle sooner than I wanted. If you want them to match and don't care staying Toyota the Ford 9 is an awesome option and I'm leaning that way for the rear on mine, nice thing is even if you keep your front setup for awhile you can match the gear ratios due to the overwhelming support on that third.

Thanks for the info, After looking at more build and lots of reading:pccoffee: I’m 99.9% sure it will be a built Ford 9”. I want to stick with 5.29 as it seems like a perfect match with 37” and my 6 speed. Also getting rid of my E locker and running ARB will make me feel better. I rarely run it as I don’t trust it after reading all of the failures.
Thanks man:hattip:Its been a fun road for sure.
