What were the lights indicating? The green truck icon blinks when it's in the process of engaging/disengaging 4wd. Once it's solid you are in 4HI. Once its off its in 2wd.

I can't remember what the lights were doing exactly. I did notice the blinking green icon but don't remember where in the process. Prob in between. Then it was solid. How long does it usually blink for?

Varies. Sometimes it'll click into/out of 4hi immediately or it could take as long as 5 seconds if things aren't lining up. That being said it shouldn't nudge along sporadically ever. Could be an automatic thing though, I'm not sure. I would say in the future let it fully engage or disengage before going back the other direction. If it's having trouble engaging or disengaging and you are stopped I would roll it forward or backward some. You can go in and out of 4hi on the move but it should also work while stopped.

Thanks. I'm going to try it again and if it still has trouble engaging. If so I'll bring it in.

So I went out into the driveway and started it up in park of course. Hit the brake and put it into 4WD H. The icon flashed and didn't stop. I put it into neutral and rocked the truck back and forth a bit like you said and the icon went solid. I made it out of the driveway but when I turned it felt like the wheels locked up and was nudging again. So I went back and into 2WD H and neutral and rocked it and did this a couple times and the icon went away and I drove off. So I guess something is wrong with the trans

Was the road covered in snow? If not when you turned out of the driveway in 4HI the nudging you felt WAS the wheels skipping on the pavement. No sharp turns on dry pavement in 4WD.

The road was wet and had slushy spots. But not covered. The wheels were skipping yeah. This never happened with my 07 4runner I traded in for the tacoma. So something is wrong right?

Ah!! It makes sense now. I should have put two and two together. I didn't realize you were turning in the parking lot which should have been obvious

The nudging is normal. Nothing is wrong with your transmission. You cannot be in 4HI in high traction scenarios (times when the tires won't easily slip - this includes wet paved roads) and make sharp turns. What happens is the front tires make a wider arc than the rear tires so the front output shaft and the rear output shaft of the transfer case begin to attempt to rotate at different speeds. Of course the transfer case isn't going to let this happen because they are locked at the same speed. So the first thing that gives in this binding scenario is the tires (hopefully). The skips/nudges/tightness is the binding being built up and relieved over and over.

The 07 4runner was probably AWD, yeah? AWD cars have differentials inside their transfer cases which allow for different speeds front to rear. This is the fundamental difference between AWD and 4WD.

Also, you don't need to be in neutral to shift to 4HI. Under normal operation I would leave it in D and shift to 4HI on the move. The rocking bit was really only a recommendation if you are stopped, are trying to shift to 4HI and it's not going. And by rocking I meant with drive or reverse. You don't necessarily need to do both but it might help if its struggling.

So in a 4Runner you need not adhere to the "no dry paved roads in 4wd" rule like in our Tacoma's?

Reason I ask... my mom wants a 4Runner but I suggested no. Because she's 70 and wouldn't learn how to use 4wd (because of everything we've talked about in this thread).

But if she can just drive it on all 4 all winter long, wet or dry, then that's a different story. She'd be just fine.

I dunno man...i don't think you're old enough to sass your Mom like that...cuz, she's...your Mom.

Edit...premature post reply lol. Yes, she'd be good with AWD, dunno if 4Runner offers in that capacity. My 4runner knowledge ends at 3rd gen

Wow this is a mind blow. I totally forgot my 4runner was AWD and my tacoma is 4x4 and there is a difference. I used AWD in the snow and slush all the time but I guess I can only use 4x4 when you can't see pavement. Period. Weird. But how do you explain it not even engaging into 4x4? The icon just blinked and blinked until I put it into neutral and pushed it around my driveway. Are there weather or traction sensors that detect the road conditions?

New 4runners use 4wd like the Tacoma, except the limited version. The limited has the awd type (works a little different than say a Subaru) system, the other trims use part time 4wd.

You're on track regarding AWD vs 4wd. But I've always assumed 4runners were 4wd like the Tacoma. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

Nope, I believe it’s because certain things in the transfer case need to line up before it can engage, so sometimes it needs to move a little first.

Good to know, thanks! So with a limited I can get her into a 4Runner. She'll be excited.

I had the v6 sport edition. In 2007. "Four-wheel drive 4Runner models employ a Torsen® torque-sensing type limited-slip center differential with locking feature. The main difference between the V6 and V8 4WD is that the V6 uses a Multi-Mode selectable system, and the V8's 4WD is strictly a full-time system. In addition, both models are equipped with a two-speed transfer case with low range for handling steep off-highway inclines.

In both systems, the Torsen® differential distributes 60 percent of available power to the rear wheels under most conditions and changes the ratio as needed based on steering input and wheel slip. Automatically shifting to a 29:71 power distribution ratio during steering maneuvers helps to enhance vehicle tracking through curves. The center differential can change the ratio to 53:47 to help control rear wheel slippage. The Torsen® differential makes the 4Runner less prone to slippage caused by sudden changes in road conditions. "
