Hello, all. I have spent an (unhealthy) amount of time researching Tonneau covers for my 2017 TRD DCSB 4x4, and have narrowed my search down to the G4 Elite and BAKFlip MX4. Does anybody have experience with both covers that wouldn’t mind sharing their thoughts/experiences? I’ve read a LOT of feedback on each cover (this site is fantastic source), but don’t think I’ve seen a comparison of both from somebody with hand in experience.

    Thanks in advance!

In that white search box in the upper right corner.... Type in "G4 Elite" or "BAKFlip MX4" and you will gain so much knowledge it will make your head hurt.

Yes. I’ve read a lot. The individual comments/reviews are helpful. Thank you.

What I haven’t found (or read) is feedback from somebody who has experience with both covers, and can provide a real world comparison.

Yep. I know the odds aren’t in my favor. I’m just trying to minimize the chance of regret, especially when spending close to $1k.

Know what you mean. I bought the TruXedo Lo Pro and wished I would of put several hundred more up and bought a different cover.

Hello, I'm hoping I can be of some assistance in comparing these two models. Over the years, I have had experience with selling both the Fold a Cover G4 as well as the MX4. While both feature a nice design, I would have to say that the MX4 takes the win. The reason for this, is the Fold a Cover tends to leak quite a bit more. (which led to us not carrying it anymore due to constant complaints). Don't get me wrong, it's well built and offers great security, but the accordion design does have some issues (more time than not) with leaking. The MX4 is going to be one of the newest hard folding covers that is on the market and has many upgrades that older model covers don't feature.

Interesting. I would have that the opposite, based on what I’ve read in a various threads.

    Thanks for the insight.

I am in the same position as the OP except I am torn between the Fold-a-cover and the Extang Encore.

I need / want to have access to the truck bed near the cab.

OP just like you I’m trying to compare as well. I watched the video Fold-A-Cover did in comparison to the Bak Flip G2 and was alarmed by the security of the G2. I have a tailgate lock, but when I saw how easy it was to pop open the cover with a hanger I became alarmed.

I’m leaning towards the G2 however would like to hear anyone’s advice on how to combat the cover security issues as pointed out in the video.

I chose the MX4 and think it looks great. The installation went well, but still need to install the drain tube and make a few adjustments for waterproofing. However, that will need to wait until warmer weather.

Ultimately, i chose the MX4 for the functionality and the looks. I’m not crazy about needing to drill a drain tube, but the pros for me outweighed the cons.

I appreciate the feedback from this thread, and the countless others I read.

Let me know if anybody has any questions.

Cool. I think I'm going to go with the mx4 as well. If I may ask.... where did you find the best price?

I bought mine from RealTruck.com for $846, but didn't spend a ton of time shopping around.

I went with Fold-a-Cover for this reason. I use an OEM bed divider, making a more secure area behind the cab. I can put 2 sets of golf clubs in there with no issues.
As far as leaks, I have very little, if none at all. This includes going though an automatic car wash. By using the OEM bed mat, any water usually ends up below that, keeping my cargo dry.
If you have a LB and want bed access behind the cab, Fold-a-Cover is the best choice.
I’ve had mine for 3 years with no regrets.

I love my Foldacover! I went through the car wash yesterday and only got a couple of drops of H20.

Fold a cover, Spacers, Scan Guage II, Weather Tech Vents, All weather floot mats, mod sideview towing mirrors, tow package, mod differential. LED back up lights, Flyzeye console/glove compartment lights, heavy duty farm seat covers, TSC bed mat.
After tons of research I put a FoldACover on my 2015 right after I bought it. The thing is awesome. Secure, utilitarian, mostly waterproof (yes a few drops when I pressure wash the truckj. I also put a rubber horse mat from tractor supply and a cloth foldable trunk organizer. Works great and worth every single penny. Want to haul furniture, fold that sucker up and strap in down, you have nearly the entire bed available. Want to travel and keep items dry and secure? The fold a cover is it. It will also lock your tailgate with and enclosed metal strape that is riveted to the tailgate. I rate it at five stars.

I use my Tacoma for everything. Everyday Lowes, Harbor Freight, Farming, and travel.

Nothing like being a dead thread back to life, but that does allow to get some honest feedback on the covers that people ended up purchasing a year or two ago.

So, what did you end purchasing and how has it stood the test of time? If you had to buy another, what would you choose? I look forward to some feedback.

    Thanks!
    Tom
