If looking to save money one option if going the eBay route is to buy an 'older' update. Those with a 2016 Tacoma probably have the OE183 map and can upgrade to the OE184 pretty cheap. That's the route I went earlier this year, paid $50 for the OE184 and sold my OE183 for $40 so got the upgrade for $10. No way would I pay $180 or whatever the dealer is asking for the latest update. I've been happy with the Entune Nav, it's not perfect but no Nav is.

Not sure which Toyota models use navigation that is based on garmin but it's not what's used in the Entune navigation.

All vehicle GPS are worthless.Just buy a Garmin. Wish a vehicle could be ordered with nav delete. Have a 10 something year old Garmin. Its portable. Stick it in another vehicle or carry it with the mount disconnected from the back. Works plugged into 12V or on its internal battery and you can carry it with you. FREE for life updates to maps anytime for anyplace in the world. Just plug into your home desktop or laptop computer. Also most maps of an area be they topographical, walking or driving trail are done in many areas and are Garmin compatible. Was driving Utah and Colorado this fall. Many local maps can be downloaded on sd,or the main unit and then returned to the road maps. However in a local point to point situation I follow WAZE on a smart phone which will give you the fastest route around traffic jam ups in real time. Your money would be better spent on a portable Garmin unit with free upgrades for life. GTS Bruce

Free for life updates doesn't actually mean for life, it means for what they define as the life span timeline of the product.

Was just at the dealership yesterday and they quoted me $200 for the update. The parts advisor was saying that I wouldn't really need it though due it being very little changes and advise if I wanted to update to wait another year.

    Don't buy the update!!!

It's definitely not worth it. It's expensive as hell for no reason (no special features that would set it above other options). This update is already "out of date" when you compare it to free navigation such as Google or Waze (the Toyota maps will be from data they collected about a year ago).

Vote with your wallet and DON'T buy it. Let Toyota see that it's a waste of their time and money to sell such expensive crap because no one is buying it. Then hopefully they'll just go the easy route and finally enable Android Auto (which JBL already does in other cars) or Apple CarPlay.

Its still $150, you have to activate it. I downloaded the DIY guide and on page 18, step 5.2 shows you have to pay to update.

Isn't there some sort of privacy issue between Toyota and Apple car play/Android auto which is making Toyota not implement it into the head unit?

No, there really isn't an "issue", it's just Toyota being overly cautious. They just want to control the use of your private data better. I assume it's because they want to minimize any chances of being sued?

Overall, Toyota is just being ridiculous. According to a few articles I just Googled, it looks like they are the last major car manufacturer that has not implemented either Android Auto to CarPlay.

This CNET video is reviewing the new Entune 3.0 in the 2018 Camery and he makes some good points once he starts talking about the lack of AA or CP. He also says that Toyota is also holding out because they they don't drivers bouncing between two interfaces and because AA or CP are not fully integrated with the car's other systems. While true, I think it's stupid reasoning because with Android Auto, I spend all of my time inside of it (I got to use it for 3 months last year in a rental). If I want to see any info about the car's other systems, I just reference the center display between the tach and speedo. With Entunes, I am certainly a LOT more distracted trying to do anything that would normally be very simple if I was using AA...and this is after 3 months of trying to learn the system. It's not intuitive at all...especially the navigation

I decided not to get the Nav system because of the costs of updates, besides I have a Garmin with lifetime updates that works far better than the toyo system. Garmin is in the GPS business, Toyota in in the vehicle business.

So my truck is currently at the dealership for the second time now. I’ve been having issues with my nav saying I’m in one spot, but really in another. They said it could be my hypertech calibrator. (I don’t see how that has anything to do with it). I’ve also been having issues with the usb connection. It says that it’s a connection issue and it’s not compatible. They quoted me at $169 for the new update but said wait to see what Toyota says is wrong with it. It SHOULD be covered under warranty and they should replace it. But no chance I’m paying that for something that should be working properly in the first place.

A few services ago I asked about my nav and was told no charge but at the time there was no update. Plan on calling up the dealer tomorrow see if it’s still free as it should be. How can a 2017 truck not find a road built over 2 years ago
